It's pretty trivial for them to see when your key was registered, so thats easy to track. As for pricing afterwards, that article is poorly worded. Oficial MS statement: Once a Windows device is upgraded to Windows 10, we will continue to keep it current via Windows Update for the supported lifetime...

Not if your keeping everything at stock speeds. And frankly, unless you are watercooling, the overclocks would be pretty small and not worth the hassle most of the time.

Anything with a M.2 slot supports booting off it to be honest. And a good M.2 drive is fast as fuck. Enabling my MB's fast boot, it takes less than 5 seconds from powered down state.

Just from a corp standpoint, they will never make a sub service only OS. There are far too many very lucrative mass license facilities that would never use it if that happened. Thats why there is a standalone Office like Bob mentioned.

I like the 5X. it's just for an extra 50 bucks, I thought the pure was a nicer deal overall, and I really like the hand feel with the curve back. And to be honest, with how delicate the Nexus 5 screen turned out to be, and the 5X being a LG device again, I was somewhat skeptical of the 5X.
