Re: My new NAS: Synology DS918+
Yeah, I know what you mean. I did buy a Small Business Premium license months back for my side work (wish I would have waiting since it's a lot cheaper for me now...), but mainly for the online mail and having it for keeping up with the features at the time. I wouldn't pay for it for the Office Suit...

Re: I joined the dark side...
Yes, Premier Field Engineer for premier support customers. I'm in the SE (Florida), but can end up almost anywhere in North America. Realistically, they'll keep me on the East Coast or remote to save costs. There is an office somewhat close, but I work from home and travel as needed. It's actually q...

I joined the dark side...
Well, not really, but some may think so. As of a few months ago, I started a new position w/ Microsoft. I"m a PFE working with Exchange and Office 365. It's been quite a ride so far and I'm only just starting. The company is so much different from any other I've worked for (both culturally and ...

Re: My new NAS: Synology DS918+
One of the small offices I help on the side just put in the same 918+ model filled w/ 4TB drives. Very nice. FP, in case it's of interest to you, Synology released a O365 backup solution. This model appears to come with 10 free licenses (not sure if it's perpetual or only the first 12 months...): ht...

Re: Announcing 1.1.1.1: the fastest, privacy-first consumer DNS service
i tried it out and had to switch back. even though the DNS performance test showed 1.1.1.1 was the fastest, i started having massive latency issues. i had forgotten that i switched the DNS and was wondering what was going on...figured it was just another wonderful Comcast issue, but then switched ba...

Re: My new NAS: Synology DS918+
Cool...I've been thinking about going the NAS route for quite a while. What's the real world power usage on that, if you happen to have a kill-a-watt or something to measure it with?

new desktop build
I needed to replace my aging desktop (huge full size tower) with something more office space friendly and up-to-date as far as power. I was considering the Intel NUC options for quite a while, then found the mini-STX form factor. There are not a ton of choices for mini-STX, but the ASRock DeskMini 1...

Re: New house networking & wireless NanoBeam virtual ethernet
I went with commercial WAPs about a year ago and couldn't be happier. I picked up several refurb Ruckus 7982 WAPs (originally $1K+ each, refurb for $50...ha...typically used in hotels or large commercial environments). They are only 802.11n, but coverage was more important for me and MIMO 3x3:3. The...

Back in the game
I've been out of the HT loop for too long after selling off my main system years ago. I couldn't haul that stuff around during multiple moves, but now that I'm settled in and have an official room for the gear (and wife approval...mostly...), I'm getting things back together. My previous setup was K...

Re: New router/firewall device
My R-16 blew a capacitor (based on the googles, it's pretty common) and I ended up going with an Edgerouter X. The config isn't bad at all, and it's quite powerful for $49 or whatever they go for now. I also set up a VPN through it so I can connect it from my mobile phone when on open wifi...works g...

Re: Petya Ransomware Vaccine: This Single File Will Protect You From Latest Attack
I pushed out the three files via GPO for all the workstations at my wife's office. I'm about to (finally) set up centralized patching for them as well. This stuff is getting out of hand.

I saw this last weekend and it was fantastic. I was expecting it to be really good based on her performance in BvS and it was better than I hoped. 9.9/10

Veeam finally released the new (non-beta) version for physical backups. This isn't limited to workstations only and works with Server OSes as well.

Re: Ju-Jitsu Instructor Provides Self Defense Techniques For United Passengers
Just imagine if a passenger actually fought back like that. They would be lucky to be left alive by the time security finished with them, not to mention the prison time that would follow.
