You can run 3-5 LEDs per wire, but it's highly recommended that you put a resistor in line with each one, because otherwise their life will be reduced. There are tons of LED/Resistor calculators out there. For 12v, I'd say that 470 ohm resistors would be fine (use one on each LED).

Wow, that's such a coincidence. I just pulled the DVD drive out of my Inspiron 9200 to swap in a DVD-RW drive. Do you think it'll fit? Looks similar. I'd get the model #, but I'm at work right now.
