EvilHorace- keep at least 3 months salary in cash (saving account/money market/cd's...easy to liquidate) for emergencies, etc. i prefer 6 months, then you are FREE from worrying about emergency needs or a job problem (layoff, injury, etc) credit cards may supplement this, but they are BAD and should...

i'm guessing NO. the problem is that they can simply monitor your upload bandwidth...which will give you away. they also search for FTP servers anyways (as you've found out), so it's unlikely you can hide it from them. now that they've noticed you they will probably be more aware of your throughput ...

thanks
thanks for the info. i ended up going back to the 1004d that it had to begin with.
i formatted and reinstalled WinME and it's so-far-so-good.
i haven't tried to overclock yet, just being happy that it's stable for a few days!

a7v
i don't have 1st hand experience with the k7v, but i've always heard that the a7v is more stable. extra options won't do much if the system is unstable.
i'm sure they are both excellent boards. kind of falls in the "are you an Asus or Abit type of person".

you owe him nothing and if you are not comfortable with the deal----ABORT!
nothing wrong with telling him exactly why, either.

theoretical limits
don't forget that 10 or 100Mbps is a theoretical peak throughput statistic achieved on paper by someone doing alot of math. the IP packet bits are not taking up the entire 60% that is "missing". it's just like a 56K modem (with the fine print that says the current limits are 52 or 53K anyw...

cheap fun
go for a v3 2000 or 3000. i don't care what everyone is saying about the lack of support from now on...the current drivers for these cards are good and will perform well for those on a budget.

mine sits at 41C idle...43-44C after use (q3/ut/seti)
yours seems to be pretty erratic and mine doesn't change enough! ????
what kind of cooling you have on it? i've got an alpha w/ arctic silver goo

temps
you're correct that it's probably not temperature...but 41C seems pretty high for a motherboard temp. my mobo's temp is aroun 30C and i don't use any fancy cooling. maybe your cpu did get too hot for a few seconds and it decided to give up for a little while?

no applause from me. it is cool that he didn't "destroy everything", but he still shouldn't have been there in the first place. too bad people don't have simple respect for others. i think i've got better things to do than search through websites and random IP addresses trying to find one ...
