What's a good low to midrange digicam?

Post by Lmandrake »

One of my sons just asked for a digital camera for christmas... (and I already got him a stereo). So I need to get smart on what is a good deal in the low to mid price range (unless I take the stereo back - then I spend more).

Thanks

a lot of people like the canon a40 ~200$

there are some decent HPs and Fujis for 1.2 megapixel for ~100

at the usual places OM, Staples, etc

My 2 Cents..

I have a Kodak DX3500 ~ $189 maybe cheaper now? And it's a 2.2 megapixel, it takes FlashCards (the old kind, not smart sticks) and it has 3xDigital zoom, big LCD display. Overall it's a VERY nice camera. Excellent quality pictures. Built in flash. But you may find something better for what you're looking to spend. eGo

Here's one I found on ebay.. Thought you might like to take a gander..

Look for optical zoom... digital zoom is just magnification and not true zoom

But it's hard to find a digicam w/optical zoom for a decent price.

depends on what price ...

i got my Fuji Finepix 2800 w/ 6x Optical for $350 at http://www.beachcamera.com/product_quer ... INEPIX2800

*btw: it's only $266 now.. damn fine camera.. if anyone's interested in some sample photos... here's when i shot off over 300 pics at my brother's wedding last month, a lot were shot in doors without adequate lighting and came out ok.. needed photoshop to auto level/contrast.. but pictures with good lighting were fantastic

might i suggest also a nice $20 multiformat card reader from NewEgg?

that sony is very grainy if you ask me :( ... it doesnt put any depth into the pictures either.

but i guess its not bad for what you paid for it.

I would suggest fugi, canon, or olympus for mid range cameras ... and nikon for higher end cameras (which i dont think you are looking for)

kodaks are OK for low end cameras.

like some one else said .. just look for a decent optical zoom .. either way you arent going to get the best pictures ever with a cheapo digicam.
