Firebird itself is being programmed with the idea of a lightweight no thrills working browser, so only the very basic features are included. There're no mouse gestures included, tabs and download manager have only basic features.

Extensions are addons for Firebird (or Thunderbird) that allow you to enhance those basic features or add new features that're not included.
You can find extensions for Firebird and Thunderbird. Some might also work with regular Mozilla, just check the homepages (Tabbrowser Extensions work).
Another page for addons is Mozdev , this one's older than the other two and has mainly Mozilla in mind though some addons from there also work in Firebird / Thunderbird.

I have been using Mozilla 1.5 for quite a while now, replacing Netscape 7.1.

I like it very much.

I decided to go with Mozilla over Netscape because of the updates that will be available.
