I am a firm supporter of Spybot. To me, it has saved me countless hours on the phone with my parents and some friends in trying to clean up all the adware, spyware etc. etc.

It has been a godsend.

Oh yeah, the guy who wrote it is pretty cool. He helped me develop some silent install switches to use at my workplace a couple years back.

Of course an AV app of choice, a firewall unless behind a router and SpywareBlaster this little app blocks most spyware before it makes it to your hdd. You wont even know it is there all you have to do is keep it updated.

IDBlasterPlus
MRUBlaster
Outpost Firewall
Blockpost plugin for Outpost
AV of choice (mine is NOD32)
NET Peeker
WinPatrol (tells you when a new startup entry was added, or when your hosts file is messed with, etc.)
Pop-Up Stopper
Protowall (awesome program that blocks millions of Bad IP's throughout the world)
Blocklist Manager (program you use to create the IP lists you use in Protowall)

Thats about all I use I think...... might have more though.

Google tool bar is a great addition to popup stopping, in addition, easy to google for anything you need :P

Spybot S&D
Ad-Aware 6
Symantec antivirus (i run corprate 8.1, it is the best, but pricy unless you have it at work :)
symantec 2004 and mcafee 8? are both crap. If you can get an older version, go for it.

Visit http://www.bluetack.co.uk to get Protowall, and the Blocklist manager. If you havent heard about them yet or havent tried them yet, I am telling you you should do that right away. They are amazing programs which when used together can end up letting you be able to disallow connections in TCP and UDP packets from any IP or IP Range which you want...... Very very useful for web browsing, since it will just about stop any and all ads/popups from even loading on the page, since the blocks happen at PACKET level. Also its great for using in conjunction with your favorite P2P since RIAA and Gov and "Big Brother Companies" will also be blocked before you even establish a connection with them.
