Anandtect to close down after 27 years :(

Post by reno »

Hardware enthusiast site AnandTech is shutting down after nearly three decades of covering computers. AnandTech’s final editor-in-chief, Ryan Smith, announced the news in a farewell post this morning, writing, “...Few things last forever, and the market for written tech journalism is not what it once was — nor will it ever be again. So, the time has come for AnandTech to wrap up its work, and let the next generation of tech journalists take their place within the zeitgeist.”

AnandTech was founded in 1997 by Anand Lal Shimpi, who led the site until retiring from journalism in 2014 to work for Apple as part of the team that delivered the M series Apple Silicon chips. Before leaving, Shimpi spoke with The Verge in 2011 about his frustrations with the “cable-TV-ification of the internet” — or online media moving away from high-quality, in-depth analysis toward sensationalism .

Sad to see it go. :(

I've gotta say, a Bible signed by the actual anti-Christ, would be a hell of a collector's item.

Wow. I still remember chatting with Anand in 1998 or 1999 I think. He had a bulletin board style (don't remember the exact name). All the conversations were live and would scroll on the screen. Mostly talking about hardware and issues with windows.

Went there and they have this posted:
Hi folks,

We wanted to make sure that you’re aware of this article that just went out regarding the future of Anandtech.

I wanted to clarify that even though we are ceasing content creation on the main site, there are no plans to close the forum at this time.

We know the forum has a long history, people have made a home here for decades and will have concerns. If there are any questions, please feel free to ask with the understanding that most likely can’t be answered right now or will be covered by it having no impact on the forum. Aside from that please be sure to let the team know how much you've appreciated their work in the article comments, there's a lot of very kind words there already and they're well earned.

LOL, I literally just hit up their forums and was a bit surprised that they were still there. I don't blame them for closing down. The internet is a different beast from what it was 20 years ago.
