Band of the week: Red September
Pop rockers celebrate new release
By Melody Baetens / The Detroit News
DETROIT -- Musician and songwriter Peter Schorn formed Red September in the mid-'90s. Since then, the rock group has put out two albums, performed all over Metro Detroit and has been nominated several times for various local music awards.
"We're 0 and 15," jokes Schorn. "We're the Susan Lucci of Detroit, but it's nice to be acknowledged."
In addition to several award nominations, Red September has been selected to appear at the Undercurrents Music Conference in Cleveland four times. The band has also participated in some of Detroit's larger music festivals, such as Earthfest and Dally in the Alley.
Most recently, Red September has been working on finishing up their first release in five years, Wake Up Call.
"We've been working on it for a long time," Schorn says. "It seems late coming out, but with the current world events ... suddenly it's right on time."
Name: Red September
Lineup: Peter Schorn, lead vocals and guitar; Paul Brown, drums; Frank Greenhalgh, bass and backing vocals.
Sound: Although the name Red September might give the impression the band is shooting for a bleak sound, the music is quite poppy and fun. Happy guitars share the spotlight with good rock and roll hooks and harmonies. But despite the pop edge, Schorn's songs are not without meaning.
Releases: Wake Up Call, CD (2001, Static Records); This Is Life, cassette (1996, Static Records).
Next: Red September will celebrate the release of Wake Up Call tonight at a double CD release party at 313.jac in Detroit. Fellow Static Records band Jettison Red will celebrate its debut release, Clear as Day. 313.jac is located above Jacoby's at 624 Brush in Greektown. Doors open at 9, and cover is $5. Both bands will have CDs for sale. Call (313) 962-7067 or visit
