All this talk about machining makes me think of something that happened at my work place when I first started, and this is no bull.
A regular technician was working on a polisher that we use to do "light" repair to cams that are damaged and it used to be common practice to wear these cotton gloves while working on it. Well that day, things went very wrong for that guy. The cam lobe had been nicked on the side and while he was using a scotchbrite pad on it, the nick on the lobe caught his glove. This setup is turning about 1000 rpm's and when it caught the glove, it pulled his middle finger with it. It didn't stop there. It ripped his finger clean off and the worst part about it......it pulled over 1ft. of tendon and muscle with it. So the glove, finger, and tendon were all whipping around until they got it turned off. Worst thing that I have ever seen in my life.
Needless to say, there are HUGE signs over these units prohibiting the use of cotton gloves now.
My employer paid for extensive surgery to his hand and if you don't know to look for it, his hand looks normal (only 4 fingers and a thumb). He also went on to become Human Resource manager (probably had something to do with the accident), has since left the company and is actually quite successful now.
When you work in environments like some of these guys do, all it takes is a split second to hurt yourself, or even lose your life
Be careful guys.....I know I am.
Btw Pred and York, we have quite a few Mazaks along with Haas, Mori-Seiki, Landis, United Grinding Technologies (Schaudt-German Equipment), with many more types of machines. I swear, if you can write the program, then it can be made from scratch.
I once seen a fella make a solid steel wine glass in a Mazak. Polished it until it was chrome and one of the sweetest things that I have ever seen anyone make from solid bar stock.

The Big Mazak we have does some cool trick stuff... We lost our best programmer he was a genious could whip out a high detailed program in no time... Our boss can program real good but he's slow at doing it... He's also 60 and when he became a machinist they didn't have the fancy CNC stuff like we have now...lol The guy that runs the Haas he just does R&D stuff... but he's damn good with that machine... Its a small inclosed Mill but some of hte stuff he's pulled out of that has amazed me.... They've got all sorts of addon stuff for it.... Abotu that finger thing that don't sound like it would have felt good at all... I normally don't wear glove and probably won'tl... When i'm cleaning the machine out i'll put on leather gloves but thats about the only time...
