I have successfully fried my first Athlon.......)*)*)*)*)*)*

And was it a t\T-bird???? or an Duron???? noooooooooo..... It was my brand new mother f...ing Athlon XP1800)*)*)*)*)*)*)*)*

So I get My new MoBo (very nice Epox KHA+) and decide I am going to move the new board in today. It overheated while I was in the BIOS setting it up.....I took off the heat sink, reapplied arctic silver II, and put the HSF back on (First Gen Copper HedgeHog working perfectly with the same proc on a IWILL KA266R.) Fire it back up.....get a very breif video card memory count up, and then black....dead.....nothing :( :(
)*)*)*

Took off the heat sink again, and found the nice normally slick artic silver to be like 50 year old caulk. It flaked off like cheap paint. And I have that tell tale "bubble" on the pcb of the chip.

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :mad :mad :mad :mad)*)*

ooo....tough! how much did it cost? Are you gonna get another one, or go back to an older processor?

I'd be crying. Hopefully they'll warranty it.

Yeah.....the place i bought it from is only 4 miles from my house....... It is 14 days on cpus (and of course today is day 14), but it is void if the cpu is cracked or burned.... but it is worth a shot, the worst they could say is no....

just curious, why did it burn?

i had a guy who installed an XP 1600 by himself today, i went over the instructions on how to do it 3 times with him before he left, and he STILL managed to fry it by not putting on ANY thermal paste, even though i told him to do it

working in retail makes me bitter, its probably giving me an ulcer

Honestly I dont know why it fried..... I have installed many many cpus/HSFs This is the one time I took all precautions. Normally I am on my back with a flashlight in my mouth, fighting with the cables in the box to get a proc in... This time I put the chip/RAM in with the MoBo outside the case, checked it several times etc.... I was really carful. Probably if I think back, I was too careful.
I guess that the HSF got hung up on one of the ruber feet. When I got the HSF off, I saw that there was only contact with about 1/4 of the CPU.

It really kills me too, cause that HSF is a charm to put on. I have never had a problem with it before.

Just out of curisosity? What HSF did you use? I did this once with a computer i built for a friend. Put a FOP 38 on it... I had to buy a fan for the HS since i didn't have one for it... Well i got the clip on backwards(if you look at them u notice they aren't bent directly in the center...) I had the mobo all of that in the computer cause the cpu was the last part i was waiting on... Got it slapped it in fired it up got into bios for about 3 seconds and poof it went dead.... Tried a few times to get it fired up but no go... Took the HSF off there was black smoke on the bottom of it and only about 1/4 of the hsf hit the core... I then figured out what had happened and was pissed at myself for not noticing it... It was a good thing it was only a Duron 700 and he didn't pay too much for it... So i wasn't out too much money to buy a new one...

If the store won't replace it try AMD... they have a 1 year warranty on all OEM CPU's....

I got back from the store a little bit ago.... They took it back no questions asked!!!! :) They tested it, saw that it did not work, and gave me a new one... They are some really cool people.

Predator...I am using a Kain Copper Hedge Hog. The original one..... It fits fine on my Iwill board, but on the EPOX board, it may not....
