Im a Tool and Die maker

My present job has me working on LARGE lathes and grinders nothing under 10 inches in diameter and usually about 20 inches long up to 22 feet in length. I have had the same type of day many times. Also being the only one who knows how to run all of the machines I end up being their 8 days a week
Now the worst day i ever had.Setup an automatic screw machine.Had it running perfect.Reached in to grab a part as it was coming off and forgot about the last drill operation.Watched as a 1/8th drill went thru my hand and held it there untill it backed up because i didnt want to screw up my setup;( What made it even worse is the only other person working with me at the time didnt havea license and couldnt drive me to the hospital.Talk about a bad day!
Anyhow i just got off of work tonight and plan to drink 12-=18 beers myself

As long as you still have ten fingers two eyes the day could not have been that bad

We don't have any machines that big... Biggest lathe will take up to 12ft long and the hole in the chuck is 5 inches diameter.... I mostly do manual stuff with the mills and lathes Haven't done much CNC but slowely learning... I was lucky i was on the small lathe but it was turning at 1200 rpm's so i'm sure that didn't help matters... lol We've got 2 manuals lathes 1 manual mill 4 CNC mills 3 inclosed 1 open for the real big stuff 1's a Haas and the rest are Mazak's... The newest one costs upwards of 650,000 dollars i think... Its a 4 axis and does some cool trick stuff... Very fast our boss is scared of that one cause its so fast. 3 CNC Lathes all Mazak... The big one is real old but it does its job. Have a big Quicky that will turn 5k i think... I've never played on that oen but all i know is it flat hauls some bootie. I am glad i have both eyes and all 10 fingers still it could have been worse but thank god it wasn't.

Take pictures
I'm sure you know the drill, keep it clean, keep covered and soak it in cider. There's a diry joke in there somewhere. If you don't get it I'll tell you.

What's strange (to me) about more serious injuries like that is that apparently pain is not really a factor, possibly a reaction due to shock?. Several years ago (like 7 maybe) I had an wedged exhaust pipe that I was prying on slip and it cut my hand bad between my thumb and finger. I looked, saw that it was very deep and several inches long so I knew I needed stitches right away, threw a rag over it holding pressure, walked into the managers office and told him I needed to go to emergency right away. I felt no pain at all until they stuck needles into the area to apply novicane before cleaning and stitching it up. After that I was OK but even the people at emergency looked squemish (grossed out)about it which seemed strange to me as you'ld think they must see worse things? My hand was bandaged up, wrapped up (at work) for a month after that as it's not easy trying to work on cars and keep a hand clean at the same time.

Yeah i always play with safety with these things.... When you have a chuck thats the matter of a couple feet from ya spinning at 1200 rpm's there isn't much between you and the chunk of steel that your machining on... Evil i know what you mean its like the time my buddy ran a Oxy/acetylen(sp) torch across my arm.... I didn't know anything had happened and i had skin peels and bare flesh exposed. didn't feel nothing until i seen him turning green all he could do was point couldn't even say oh shit look at your arm he was speachless... I was like cool ran to the first aid kit grabbed the burn cream and mile of qauze and off to the ER we went... felt nothing till they was poking at it and cutting away the dead skin then i felt that... Just one of those days... The beers done its job tonight and i'm going to bed

My fingers sore but not seriously in pain now... now in the morning when i pust out the antiseptic spray and wrap it again.... You might just hear me screamin' like a lil bitch! lol I'll just be glad when tomorrows over and i can die for the rest of saturday and all day sunday! And someone better post some good stuff in the FS forum i'm gonna have 30 hrs OT on this check and won't know what to do with the spare cash... Klipsch 5.1's and a GTXP are sounding very good right about now hehe or maybe a GF4 ti4200....

My dad just broke his finger on a lathe at work. Don't know exactly what happened but he hit something where it smacked his finger, bent it around his other fingers and nearly broke it off, right below the knuckle. He had to get plates and shit in it and he doubts he'll be able to use it again...

that sucked big time when that happend to me
i have cut my hand on a lathe before ... was nething like what happened to you all though
its funny how antiseptic sprays and all that med stuff hurts more then the actual gettting cut or whatever lol

At the urging of my sister I stuck my index finger in an electic beater once. My dad had to cut the beaters off my finger. It was pretty cool, the skin was indented to the bone but not cut. Now my index finger curves in towards the middle finger.
