What firewall are you using now?

And/or what is the best?

I've been using zone alarm and just upgraded to the new 3.0 version but it's a pain to get the settings right. Seems no matter what settings I use it stops many pages fom loading and keeps popping up warning boxes. So I find myself exiting zone alarm and then opening it back up. Tried to go back to version 2.6 but it gives me all kinds of nice errors.

Others I've considered are Black Ice, Syquest and Norton firewalls. Anyone know of good ones that do the job well but are also not annoying? :D

I used Nortons Personal Firewall for about 3 years and liked it a lot. It was easy to configure and use. About 2 months ago I got a Linksys cable router and Nortons caused problems seeing the other computer on my network so I ditched it and relied upon the NAT firewall in the router. I am sure if I would have taken any time at all I could have got it to work with my network but just didn't see the need anymore. Long story kinda short I would recomend Nortons.

ZoneAlarm, the free version 2.6.362 , never had any problems with it.

I dunno if I still need it since my main machine is behind my Linux PC that does the DSL router thingy (NAT) and runs a Linux firewall using IPTABLES ...

BlackIce configues pretty easily. I also have ICS running and the two together have defended me well. I mod a popular gaming board and some of the kiddies take none too kindly to rule enforcement ;)

Using a Netgear RT311 router here, with the latest firmware, along with some extra security filters. Everything shows stealth and incoming ICMPs are even dropped. I also use the logging feature.

I am using the NAT in our Linksys and Zone Alarm on each computer. I was using Norton, but couldn't figure out how to let the computers still communicate over the network.

Therefore, I have stuck with ZA.. :)

And, actually, the NAT would probably explain why I am not getting any alerts on our Zone Alarm log files.. hmm

Stick with ZA Pro. You can easily stop those ZA warning message popups (like was happening here for example) by going into their settings as I had to do that too. I can't seem to see it now in ZA but I remember seeing a box that was checked and when unchecked, stopped those annoying pop-up alert warnings with the latest version.

ZA got all goofy for me in WinXP so I tried a few different ones and ended up sticking with the free version of Sygate Personal Firewall. It's just as good as ZA and not overly complex like some of the others I tried...

ZA Pro at home, Netscreen here at work with ZA on a few machines like mine: want to see what apps are sending home without asking permission :}

You know if I wasn't running the Linksys I would probably run none. I don't feel the need for it.
