"Material Girl" Madonna has had another No. 1 chart success -- this time heading a poll for music's 100 top female artistes.

She romped home to the No. 1 spot with 17 percent of votes cast by viewers of VH1 music channel in a poll to find the greatest women in music over the past 50 years.

With a career covering 19 years, 12 albums, three world tours and 60 million album sales, the star with the ever-changing public image, beat a galaxy of performers.

VH1 said Friday that over 750,000 votes were cast.

Kylie Minogue confirmed her popularity, winning second place in the top five, ahead of Celine Dion, Whitney Houston and Aretha Franklin.

Kate Bush, forever famous for her 1978 debut single Wuthering Heights, was best-placed British singer, in 10th place.

Britney Spears was 9th, with fellow Americans ahead of her -- Tina Turner (6); Mariah Carey (7) and Janet Jackson (8).

Most of the greats made it into the chart. Barbra Streisand (22), Dusty Springfield (30), Shirley Bassey (45), Dolly Parton (47) and Kirsty McColl (74)

Billie Holiday came in at 50th, Yoko Ono 99th and in 100th spot was Erykah Badu.

Where to even start. Yeah a few listed there should be in the top 100 but c'mon. <img src="http://sbp777.homestead.com/files/ugone2far.gif"> Kylie Minogue 2nd? Britney 9th? Obviously this poll sucks.

Any list that has Yoko Ono on it is invalid as far as I'm concerned...

Any poll that puts Madonna over Billie Holiday is invalid as far as I'm concerned.

That's like comparing Prince to Frank Sinatra...

I agree. :;

Just thinking about that list, there really aren't that many geat female singers. Counting just hits, I guess madonna is no. 1. Counting class, she is probably last though.

Wonder where LuLu came in. Or that Latin singer, forget her name. She sounds far better than that mini-mouse sounding Spears. Though Spears is a major honey. But that's all I like about her. Can't listen to her music for long, start to have wizard of oz flashbacks and hear her saying "are u a goot weetch or a bat weetch".

Never use to think much about Madonna untill Spears, Agulara and the rest of those mindless Bimbos hit the scene. Compared to them Madonna's a Diva.

Personally I like Tina Turner the best out of that lot. And what the hell was Yoko Ono doing on that list? To even consider her a singer is an insult to anyone who ever sang in the shower.

Actually Enigm0r, I put those 2 sentences too close together. LuLu was a popular British singer in the early 70's. The Latin singer I was thinking of is Agularia.

LuLu btw is best know for singing the title song to what I think is still one of the most enjoyable 007 movies, The Man with the Golden Gun.
