Survey: Most Say Adulthood Begins at 26
The law may imply that you're a grown-up when you're old enough to vote, serve in the military or drink legally. But most Americans really think adulthood begins at age 26, according to a new study from the University of Chicago.
The study said most people don't consider a person grown up until they finish school, get a full-time job and start raising a family.

Yah, I think it should be 18 too, but what are we considering an adult? I think at 18, you should be able to take on all the responsibilities that come with being independant. Which would include all the stuff they make you wait until you're 21 to do. Drinking for one. On almost any base overseas, the drinking age is 18, but you come back here, it's 21.. What's wrong with this picture? And off base it's 16 or there is no age limit, so you can't say it's because it's overseas. I just feel, if you can move out, and be your own person at 18, that would include all the things that come along with being independant. I live "on" my mother's property in a studio that we built. I pay her over $700 a month just to stay here. That's 2/3rds of my checks. She doesn't make me pay rent, or electricity. But I still give her $200 a month to help out with any and all of the bills (this is usually more than the bills total), and I give her $500 a month to pay her for some of my bad debt that she got me out of. I have been doing this since I was 17. So I feel that at 18, you should inherit all the responsibilities of an adult. But that's just my .02

I think it depends on the person but according to the study i just became an adult LOL I think i really grew up when i was 22. Found out i was gonna be dad got married. Stopped all the partying and bullshit that goes along with it. Didn't need a kid growing up around an alcoholic dad, I use to drink a half case a night, weekends a case a day. God i sure don't miss those days and the hangovers

"when you had sex for the first time!"
Who else voted this one?
lol
But really in my opinion i'll never really become an "ethical" adult...
As in thats wrong...
Don't do that...
If Its illegal stop!...
HaHaHa those adults (my parents) are like that....
everyone needs a margin of error
(and i know that if Demrok reads this he'll just laugh cause of me saying "i'll never become an adult" and with me voting "sex for the first time"...) and no... its "ethical Adult" not "adult"
Can't let him sneak that one in on me

Depends on the opinions of those doing the judging and the older people get, the higher that age becomes. It's funny because my wife and I have been together for 26 yrs now and according to her father (who's now in his 80s) the "age of having ones witts" has always been years older that us and the # goes up by the year. The last time we asked him, that age was somewhere in the high 60-70s so to us, will always be un-obtainable
. I think it was alot lower years ago.
Now..to me, I'd say over 25 but that's just my opinion. My son's almost 19 now and doesn't seem very adult like to us so far.
When I was 18 and the Vietnam war was going on, the legal adult/drinking age in many states dropped to 18 as they bought the idea of "old enough to go to war, old enough to drink" and it flew. Years later the drinking age went back up to 21 but otherwise one's legally an adult at 18 (old enough to vote, old enough to be tryed as an adult in court and go to jail, old enough to be self supporting and a parent is no longer then legally bound to support that 18 yr old person).
