the Last time I was Talking to myself . I got into such a heated argument . that is why I swore I never talk to that guy again. you know what it worked now no buddy talking to me.
I bet it needs little cooling, there is so much surface area. Although it looks rediculous, it's actually a good idea to make something with that much surfance area.
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ w/ stock cooler, 1GB PC3200, Asus K8N, Built by ATI Radeon 9600 Pro, two 45GB IBM 7200rpm IDE drives, 16X DVD-ROM, Pioneer DVD-RW +/i, Creative Soundblaster LIVE 5.1, Antec Sonata w/ 380W Antec psu.
Looks like a new psychodelic frizbee. :funny

For those that haven't caught on - that's a raw substrate wafer as it comes out of a fabrication line - it has hundreds of processor chips (just the little chips in the center of your CPU) on it. They need to be cut out in the next step and a soldered to a CPU package.
80% of a CPU is just the package to breakout all the wires to pins. The actual CPU itself is just the little chip in the middle.

Why would they make it circular then? You're wasting a ton on the edges.

They ARE round - they have to be. The substrate is made by sending a beam of light through a mask. The image of the mask is projected through a series of lenses in a circle, thus the target needs to be a circle.
Took me a while to find a chip fab tutorial on Google, but here you go: http://www.infras.com/Tutorial/sld002.htm

Nice overview on chip fabrication there FP. I actually spent a year working for a photo"mask" plant verifying pattern files and prepping the programs before they were sent downstairs to "write". It was a hell of a change from the automotive and aircraft industry where thousands of an inch were consider precise to find yourself trying to comprehend a nanometer. :;
