gah people frustrate me. This guy i know asks me to re-install windows XP for him. Wipe it clean and then put it back on. So I say alright no problem. I've known this guy for a few years. I shoot down to his house and attempt to throw it on. Right before i hit the button to format i ask if hes got all his data off of it and has his XP cd. He says yeah and goes to grab his cd. When I see the CD i hit enter and it starts formatting. He gives it to me. I look at it, then the backside. Littered with scratches. nice. I tell him it may not work because of his cd. (I dont have an XP Home CD). SO its all formatted and I put the cd in and reboot. Cool, boots from the cd. Then as it starts copying files i keep getting "Setup cannot copy xxxxx.xxx" Oh well isnt that nice. So I try to get it going a few times more. I copy the i386 dir from the cd to the HD. No dice. various files would not read. OK thats nice. Well by this time he says "hey man i gotta go to work" What the hell. You dont have someone to come over to do this then sya u hvae to leave. So i say ok well i'll take it with me and take care of it at home and hopefully i can get the cd working. After he goes and pleads with his mom i finally take it (feeling very uncomfortable with it for being left and hearing her say "i dont want him taking it" blah blah). So i get it home. I cant get the damn cd to work. So i say OK. Well I'll try to get win2k on it so he'll have an OS while he acquires a new cd. OK now I'm getting win2k giving me shit about inaccessible boot device when it goes to load. grr. So finally after a couple hours with that i say it. I'm just gonna install 98, then 2k on top of it. That works out great.
SO now hes got an OS while he gets his cd replaced. I did him a favor, right? I mean granted i should have seen the cd before i formatted but come on.
So now he IM's me "Thanks for breaking my computer. you put on an unupgradeable version of windows" Apparently you cant put winxp home onto this version of win2k. The he says "I had to pay 122 dollars to have winxp put on it. And a new video card. They said my cd worked fine."
WTF. I really am starting to not like this guy. Demeaning me like i dont know what i'm doing...grr...
Sorry for the rant and profanities by the way. I just needed to let off some steam...
I hear ya.. Bout a year ago I get a call from a guy I sold a Pentium 100 to about 4-5 years ago telilling me he went to add/remove software and hit add/remove hardware by mistake and now Dis/Dat don't work..
Some how thats my fault... Golly..

This is why I quit fixing computers. I could tell you about 10000000 stories of how I got screwed like that.
I put a new stick of memory in a computer for a friend of my wife and she (the lady with the computer) thought I was her new tech support on call. She would call me down the street to help her uninstall some BS program she downloaded from the net. I had to stop taking her phone calls it was so bad.
The worst though, my dad mails me a computer that belongs to his roomate's girlfriend. She want's new memory and a hard drive wipe. So, I do just that, and mail it back to him (her). Well, they get it out of the box and it won't boot so I get in the car and drive 8 hours to check this thing out. Turns out the mobo just needed to be re-seated. So I get it up and running, she pays me for the new memory and I get in the car and drive home, I made 4 bucks off the memory, not enough to cover my gas. Two days later my dad tells me she deleted some files under windows and the computer won't boot. I tell him she is going to have to get it fixed, I'm not responsible for her dumb ass deleting files off the C: drive (windows 95 days). So, she takes it to the local shop and he re-installs 95 and tells her the memory was installed wrong......UM, the computer booted and ran fine till she erased damn files out of the root partition......So, I said F fixing puters, now I ONLY work on my own, I won't mess with anyone elses, burned too many times man.
I don't know how the computer shops do it. You know people muck up thier own machines everyday and since they had it in the shop four weeks ago it must be the shops fault! What a mess.
Well this is the first time i've ever had a problem. I mean I was just mad cuz he made me look like an idiot. But I jsut decided, I've made way too much money over the years to quit. 1 moron doesnt hurt ya know?
