METHUEN, Mass. (AP) -- Coaches on a Little League team filed a protest with the league after an umpire ordered the players to stop speaking Spanish during a state tournament game this week.

Coaches said the order demoralized the Methuen players and cost the team the game.

"This never should have happened," coach Chris Mosher told the Eagle-Tribune newspaper. "These are 14-year-old kids who should not have to deal with any of this, especially in Little League baseball."

National Little League spokesman Lance Van Auken said there's no rule against players speaking Spanish or any other language on the field. But he said it's too late to reverse the decision or the outcome of the game.

"It appears the umpire was concerned that the coach or manager may have been using a language other than English ... to communicate potentially 'illegal' instructions to his players," Van Auken said in an e-mail to The Associated Press Friday. "The umpire simply overstepped his authority, and there was no malicious intent."

Mosher said the incident happened Tuesday night during a Junior Little League game against Seekonk in Lakeville.

Methuen was winning 3-1 when assistant coach Domingo Infante instructed the pitcher in Spanish to try to pick off a runner at second base. After the unsuccessful attempt, the umpire called time-out and spoke with a Little League official who was at the game. The unidentified umpire then decreed that only English could be spoken.

"All I could hear was, 'We cannot allow this,"' Mosher said. "At this point I was baffled why we could only speak English."

Mosher said he challenged the ruling, but the Little League official said it would stand. Infante then left the game in protest, which Mosher said demoralized his pitcher and catcher, who speak little English. Methuen lost the game 10-6, though the team remains alive in the tournament.

Van Auken said the loss can't be reversed because a formal protest must be filed during the game. He told the Eagle-Tribune the umpire won't be punished.

"You're talking about human beings," Auken said. "Human beings do make mistakes."

Crap like that peeeces mee off.

That's being unfair to the other team if allowed. Soon the caucasians will be the minority here. We already have less rights than the so called minorities. They know that and many take unfair advantage. We bitch about something they are getting away with then we risk being labeled a racist.

I hear ya!!! Here in So Cal it is out of control. Hell 80% of the parents who send their kids to the school my kids go to CAN NOT SPEAK ENGLISH. It ticks me off how we cater to them because they cant speak the language.

And this has what to do with them speaking Spanish? I bet most of them speak Spanish and English. The reason they probably speak Spanish to each other is because they are more fluent in Spanish plus English is one of the most confusing languages (it being a hybrid of Gallic and German) In Spanish there is usually only one meaning for each word where as a word in English could mean many different things. I remember how difficultt Spanish was, well for someone who learned Spanish first, English is much more difficult do to words having multiple meanings. That doesn't mean they shouldn't learn to speak English because I feel they should being in a predominantly English speaking country but I haven't a problem with them speaking Spanish to each other if that's their native language.

I really dont have issues with people speaking a foreign language among themselves. My issues come in when we end up having to cater to them and their chosen language. For example EVERYTHING that comes home from my kids school is in English on one side and Spanish on the other, any time there is a meeting or event at the school they have to have a translator so whatever is said is first said in English then repeated in Spanish. The one that got me the most was when I went into the local DMV to pick up a book to study for the drivers test for my nephew. I found books in every language I could think of but none in English. When I asked someone who worked there they told me they had them behind the counter because they did not have enough room on the rack for them.

Red, you missed the whole point. I probably wasn't clear enough.

Nowdays many jobs require one to also speak spanish or you ain't gonna be hired, you have to select englee or spanish at the teller machine, when you call businesses, now many hardware store have the signs for each isle in both languages, And as situations Randy described. BS like THAT is what I don't like.

Why cater to them too easily. Make them learn our language if they wish to work where talking is needed. If they have the audacity to be here illegally then at least have the damn decency to learn the language, Do other countris allow what we allow.

I lived in Spain for three years and I've also lived in several other non-english speaking countries. Most of the time if you showed an effort to speak their language they would muddle through it with you. But if you didn't try and got rude or showed frustration because they didn't understand english they didn't want anything to do with you.

When I first moved to Spain my spanish was pretty limited, but after being immersed in the culture (I didn't live on base) and having to get parts for my motorcycle at spanish vendors I learned Spanish very quickly. I speak more spanish than most people however I'm not fluent (still need about another years teaching). I can also read and understand (to an extent) Italian, German, and a little Portugeuse. But I don't speak any of those languages very well.

Having said that and having made the effort to learn their language (spanish) I can say that I do think if you're going to go to school here, or work here, or live here and try to function in society, you should learn to speak the native language. English.

A few times I've been at the work place and some Mexicans or South Americans had a problem with something and it wasn't being resolved to their satisfaction and they started talking bad about me in spanish. When I quickly returned something back at them in spanish they were absolutly stunned and just left. I guess they didn't think some 6'5" white guy living in Louisiana would know how to speak spanish..

True a lot of it is for the $$$ but not all of it. For example it has to cost the schools lots of $$$ sending everything home in both English and Spanish, or the DMV printing the handbook in all the different languages has got to cost a small fortune.

I'm surprised you would see it that way, considering they also spend the money they earn around here. A mexican guy bought my last car from me, though he didn't speak english too well, he was trying and I commend that. They're not here to destroy us...

And btw, I have nothing against mexicans. I have 2 now that I consider good buds. Just the ones who refuse to even try and learn our language when they are in an environment where talking goes on. Because of that yes businesses has catered to them so they don't have to.

LMAO I dont resent Mexicans either...hell my Mom's maiden name is Rodriguez. I do hate how the ILLEGALS have changed life around here though.

You can see how it's a completely different situation for them. Gee, poverty in a corrupt ****hole country, or possibly making some decent money somewhere else? I'd be doing the same thing as them.
