How to properly freeze a hard drive...

Out of curiousity, what would make anyone ever think that freezing a dead HDD could do anything? I might have more fun putting it on a bonfire thus knowing that its data will never be recovered by anyone

yea... morons.. the second you put it in the water the bearings are shot.. not to mention if any water gets into the actual platter area and messes with the heads its done too.

thats why you have to put your HD in to ZipLoc bags first before you put them in the water and freezer.
Obviously this guy wasnt following proper procedure.

The freezing ONLY works (if you're lucky) if the problem is a jammed actuator or seized spindle bearings. This is why it doesn't always work.

The idea is that the different compression rates of different metals MAY cause it to unstick long enough for you to get something off of it.

In no way does freezing FIX a drive. It's just a way to try to make it readable long enough to recover data.

Moisture in the drive doesn't matter as long as you keep the electronics dry or just blow dry the circuit board.

It's a one-off and the last resort. After freezing the drive will likely be a lost cause anyway. You only need to freeze it for an hour at most.

i cant say it works or not .and not lookedat thelink . but a good friend of mind did put his wifes dead hd in there freezer .and they are shakly reps so they needthe info on the drive . it did work for them and has lasted over a 6 months now ! but it could be just the moving around of the hd that made it work(free it up )who knows all i know it did the trick for him !
