Ditto. I worked as sound engineer at horse tracks for 15 years. Never understood it. There's MAYBE 3 guys in the pressbox who actually make money on their wagers consistently over time, and they use all kinds of charts and databases and they're out there in the early morning watching the horses warm up.
You and me the best we can do is have a good DAY but don't come back again the next day or I guarantee you'll lose. The odds are even worse at a casino.
And don't get me started on lotto. I call it a tax on idiots (sorry if I offend any lotto players but that's the way I feel about it). You have better odds at the race track. and you'll get more entertainment value.

I love going to the horse track. My wife and I go, we each bet $2 per race. It's not about winning money, we do it for entertainment. We love watching the horses and betting $2 on a horse gives you a reason to root for one, but still go home happy, even if you lose every race. Worse case scenario, we get about 4 or 5 hours of entertainment for about $40-$50. Cheaper than going to the movies.

Exactly. Horses & casino should be considered entertainment. Decide how much you can afford to lose. Have fun. If you come out ahead go home and stay home because if you come back tomorrow I guarantee you will lose.

I can see horses being entertainment, but not casinos. But that's me.

I'm not a casino person either, but on my last cruise several years ago I did dress up one night in a tux and went down to the ship's casino and played Black Jack for a couple of hours pretending I was James Bond playing Baccarat in Casino Royale (the book - they made it Poker in the recent movie).
That was fun and I broke even (only because as anyone in the cruise business will tell you, cruise ship casino odds are setup to favor the guests MUCH more than a regular casino because they've already milked you for the cruise ticket and this is actually a form of entertainment). Tipped the pretty dealer $50 and thanked her for an entertaining evening.
Now having been in the Parimutuel racing industry for 15 years, let me tell you that the fairest game you can play is the Greyhounds. All things being equal, a dog will run his arse off for you. Sure he can be drugged (and that does happen although it's hard to get away with) but otherwise he'll just merrily chase that rabbit.
Jai-Alai has to be the dumbest sport to bet on. The game is so rigged it's not funny. As for the horses, I can't tell you how many times I've seen a horse reigned in before the finish line. One time I saw a jock at Gulfstream Park pull back so hard and obvious on the reigns (the horse REALLY wanted to win and it would have if hadn't yanked on those reins and even then it won Show) that people came out of the grandstands to lynch the guy. I thought there was going to be a riot. Security had to escort the jock out of there.
I've also seen electrolytic capacitors that were tossed out into the infield (a jock will use them as a cattle prod). Totally illegal but it happens occasionally.
