48 Parenting FAILS

Post by FlyingPenguin »

I would personally add 1 more. Every year at the Miami Springs River Cities festival they setup an alligator pit and sooner or later some dumb redneck comes along and dangles his kid in the pit.

I like guns, and my father taught me to shoot early, but the kid in the middle is too young to be handling one. At that age they have no idea if they're toys or things that can do harm. If Daddy gets his ass shot off one morning because she decided to play with Dad's toys, then who's to blame?

i work under the assumption that the parent is responsible enough to lock up his guns when not in use for shooting or photography

Yeah, I'm pretty much doubting that they are loaded. Heck, I don't know that they could handle the extra weight of bullets.

Wow, that must have been a light trigger. I know my daughter sure wouldn't be able to pull the trigger on mine. That said, that was just plain dumb. This isn't even the first time that I've seen such carelessness with firearms in the middle-east. It seems that they don't know the concept of safety. There's no way I'd just hand a clueless kid a loaded gun even if the safety was on. I'm continually amazed what a child can accomplish when they set their mind to it.

I totally believe a kid can handle a gun. I also firmly believe that that kid will be (my daughter hasn't even seen mine yet) taught proper handling from the first day & will be guided until unconscious safety is reached. As of right now, my daughter won't take one step into a parking lot or street without an adults hand. Nor will she let the driver of a vehicle move an inch before she's buckled (she'll scream in either occasion). I plan on the same for guns or heck anything that could be life threatening.

I don't have children so it's hard for me to relate, but the way my father taught my brother and I was to introduce us to the concept of using a weapon and target shooting around the age of 10 mainly with a pump action BB gun (still an excellent introduction to basic weapon handling and safety IMO).

There was a .22 rifle that was the only weapon we were allowed to use under supervision. As we got older we got to go hunting with Dad and I learned to use the shotgun and his 30-06 rifle. I never liked hunting much, I preferred target shooting - particularly skeet and trap shooting. My brother was more of the hunter.

Now on a humorous note - and my father's own grand Parenting FAIL - around age 10 Dad also first entrusted my brother and I with our own fireworks on the 4th of July, but he did not trust us with matches. So he gave each of us a cigar that we could use to light our fireworks. True story :lol
