Nice shooting day

Post by FlyingPenguin »

Had a couple of friends over and we did some target shooting. I live on 20 acres and I have a backstop consisting of a 9 foot tall mound of dirt left over from when they bulldozed and paved my access road.

Got to try out my father's 55+ year old Marlin 30-30 lever action rifle, which hasn't been fired in 30 years. Nice gun. Dead accurate. Kicks like a mule, though. No rubber pad on the stock.

Always loved that gun as a kid. Reminded my of the Rifleman TV series.

30-30 does a spectacular job of destroying hard drives and I had a stack of them waiting for destruction.

Nice day of shooting.

Sadly, I haven't been out to the range in about a year. Really need to fix that. Was actually thinking about doing that this weekend.

Actually, the hard drives were still in my scrap metal pile waiting to go to the recycling center, so I took some photos. This is what high velocity 30-30 Winchester rounds do to a hard drive:

I just looked up the serial number for my Dad's Marlin 336RC 30-30. Serial starts with an "R" which identifies the year of manufacture: 1958. It's 2 years older than I am. Still has the original leather and brass strap. There was some green mold around the brass - I guess a reaction with the leather. Cleaned it off with a toothpick and a tooth brush.

Very nice. I just bought kid his first rifle. Went with a CZ-452. He's only 11 and not very big, so it was more of finding something sized right for him where he wasn't too uncomfortable.
