In the future as gasoline becomes less important, what are the politicians going to do with gas tax? Tax us on the air we breathe to make up the difference? Here in CA, they are thinking of changing the tax on gas to a tax on the miles driven. Not sure how that will work.

You're assuming these low gas prices will persist. Trust me they will not. There's a glut of oil right now, but it won't last. If Opec ever gets their act together (and things must be getting pretty desperate for them), output will be reduced.

Heck a small war (or threat of one) would double the price of oil overnight.

This is why the airlines are still upgrading to fuel efficient planes. They know the cycle.

This is also why it's dumb to buy a gas-guzzler right now unless you are prepared to pay $4 a gallon for gas in a year.

I think we'll see a mileage tax at some point. The idea has been floated before but it's never been fleshed out. First of all, does the state of feds collect the tax? (probably both) If the states collect the tax, how do you know which state to pay if you drive in multiple states.

I'm not for another tax but we do need to fix our roads and I think it is fair to charge by miles driven which is essentially what a fuel tax accomplishes. Maybe for electric vehicles outlets can be dedicated that place a surcharge on that electric. We may have a lot of toll roads in the future.

The vehicles that mostly destroy the roads are the big trucks.

It's as low as $1.37 for regular here and thanks to Gasbuddy, I find stations that only gouge us an extra $0.50 for premium being that all of my cars take premium.
In this state (apparently not everywhere else), premium is now typically $0.80 over regular so I now use the Gasbuddy app every time so I can locate the places that aren't gouging so badly, only $0.50, $0.60 over regular.

It sucks. Use to be only $0.20 over reg. years ago but now the logic is that if your car uses premium, you must be wealthier and can afford to pay more for gas.

Temporary or not, I'm enjoying it while I can. Surely beats the $4.50 it's been up to in the past.

One thing that might help keep gas prices lower is that more people are buying vehicles that use less gas or no gas at all (electric). They raises prices too high again, more will look for alternatives. Right now, Tesla's hurting as a result of this but when they launch their new affordable car (~$35K) and if gas prices rise high again, I think they'll take off.

Yeah I'd like to get a Tesla if it's the $30k range.

I had a 1996 Cadillac STS that required premium. I LOVED that car, but I cried every time I filled that tank. Gave the car to a friend of mine and it's still running.

Yeah my wife's starting to hint at getting tired of her 2009 Volvo, so if the model 3 is out next year, with incentives, it's a no brainer for me (as long as it isnt trash quality, but tesla has been anything but so far).

Seems like any car that's a premium import, takes premium. I drove 5 BMWs over a 15yr period. That hurt at the pump. I do enjoy being able to buy regular for my Grand Cherokee. Now that the lease is up this year, I'm not sure of what I want but the 2 or 3 vehicles that I'm eyeing take premium. Ugh!

BMW, MBs, Audi, etc.....all typically require premium. Annoying.

like i may of posted before even a Chevy Volt requires that you run premium in it. found this out after my nephew checked his owners manual after 3 years plus of ownership
the whole time he was running regular in it.
