Holy crap. I can't believe they found them alive.

The feel good story of the week! Props to the divers - caves are scary places!

Going to be a very complicated rescue. Trained rescue divers could barely get through to them. The kids will have to learn to dive, wait until fall when the rainy season ends, or find a land access way out. Don't know if they could bring in eqpt like they use to rescue miners by digging a vertical shaft.

More pics and a diagram
Cave has some nasty spots where divers have to take off their tanks and push them ahead. When I was learning to dive I read a bunch of books about cave and deep penetration wreck divers. Conclusion: they are incredibly bold and crazy.

Having done a bit of cave diving I'll chime in. It does look like they're training the kids to dive. The alternative of waiting 4 months until the rains end doesn't seem workable.
This has been done before, the difference is that usually it's one or two people that need to be rescued.
They have managed to get a lot of extra pumps installed, and diverted some of the water. Reports also say diving engineers are trying to widen the narrow spots.
Ultimately they will probably bring one person out at a time, escorted by a minimum of two divers, with additional divers spaced along the route, and then climbers stationed in dry areas where some climbing is required. It'll be tedious and time consuming, but it's totally doable. The fact that the kids are in good physical condition helps greatly - they won't be dead weight. I'm guessing they'll want to wait until they are better fed (you can't just start chowing down after going without food for 10 days), but kids bounce back fast.
The most important thing will be to teach the kids is not to panic in what will be a very scary underwater environment with low visibility. It's less about actual swimming skills and more about how to handle yourself if you bump your mask loose, and need to clear it, and to know how to properly use a buddy tank if they have a problem with their gear. They will likely need to wait for child- size masks to arrive - not a common item. Some of those kids are pretty small.
The better option would be to dig a hole down to them from above, but the terrain is very rugged and there's no roads up there, so it might not be practical. Would be a great time for some mining/engineering company to get involved and donate gear and expertise in exchange for some positive PR.

With the monsoon setting in, I suspect they are worried about the cave filling up and the flow getting too strong in the passageways. I am sure someone has or will do a visual for signs of high water marks in the cavern where the boys are.
I think I saw somewhere the pumps full tilt are doing 1 cm a day.

Yeah, the big fear would be a large rain causing strong currents. Each person rescued will present it's own unique challenges.

Re: Video shows first look at soccer team trapped for a week in Thailand cave
Interesting story about the assistant coach who's with the kids in the cave. He used to be a monk.
No one in Thailand is blaming him. The kids always go into the cave after practice, so they figure they would be in there with or without him, and he may be the reason they're all still alive. He gave up all his food to feed the kids, so he's in the worst condition from malnutrition. He also taught the kids how to meditate to conserve energy and air. The parents all consider him a hero.

Just as the last divers and medic were on the way out the main pump went kablooey and the water started rising.

Re: Video shows first look at soccer team trapped for a week in Thailand cave
Looks like the kids were all sedated and carried out strapped to on a stretcher, wearing a full-face diving mask, so no scuba training was required. That also answers how they dealt with the problem of someone panicking down there during this ordeal.
