I was just now heading to bed when Elmdea posted,,, :

"It's been a week since John fell. A hard week. A week of absolutely knowing the Divine is orchestrating so much: caregivers, friends showing up to visit exactly when John or I needed them to, and the list goes on.

He's stopped eating. He drank 1/2 an Ensure on Friday, none since. He's still drinking some Ginger Ale and some water. He can hardly sit on his own. This master story teller can't find the words for simple things he wants. He's now on liquid pain meds because he was having trouble swallowing his pills. Tomorrow, he'll get a catheter, at his request.

I've let him know it's OK to go. I can feel him moving closer to the Summerlands/Otherworld. I'm reminded again of the paradox of how strong and how fragile these human bodies are. While I doubt he'll make it through this next week, he's surprised me many times before.

I don't know what else to say. Please pray for peace for each of us."

Elmdea, you have both dearly loved,,, may peace find its place in your hearts.
Heartfelt hugs to you both. <3 "

Been through this with my mother last year. When they stop eating it's pretty close to the end. We become like animals and just want to curl up in a corner somewhere and die. We know we're dying on a cellular level and we just stop eating and drinking. The Hospice nurse had to teach us not to worry so much about my Mom not eating or drinking much at the end. It's the normal process, but your human instinct is to want to nurture them and make them eat and drink, but all you'd be doing is making them choke. It's hard to deal with.

At this point I just hope he goes peacefully and quickly. Realistically, any improvement would just be short lived, and a cruel tease for his loved ones.

Crap, I'm crying right now. Not sure if it's for John, or my Mom, or both.

My heart goes out to Elmdea and the rest of the family.

There just aren't words for these occasions. It's hard to see someone go when you knew them when they were full of life. I hope things go well for him an his family.

Yeah I remember that stage when my mother-in-law started going downhill, and it started without eating. Organs begin to shut down etc. It was really sad towards the end, because she did not even know who I was as she laid there curled up in a ball. This was about 3-5 days before she passed.
I just hope any remaining time he has its painless.

like other have said Im at a loss for words . I did see my step father go down hill years ago when he was in hospice in arizona. I know when I left to return to michigan as my sister took over watch .that it was just a matter of days before the call would come .we be flying back to make arrangements and start to settle the estate . it came like 3 or 4 days later if memory serves me correct. before anyone said anything. I seen it in his eye's they were like a hollow emptiness to them . the hospice nurse confirmed my thoughts that the time was very close.we didn't have 24 hour hospice care just a couple hours at most a day. in part because of where his home was in arizona. there just was not the avail caregivers in the area . so my sister and I .had to arrange are lives to be in Arizona in rotactions .seeing both lived in michigan and each would fly in and stay 2-4 weeks at a time . we get like 10 hours a week relief by a hospice aid to run to do shopping or just relax from the task at hand.

I went through this with my aunt, 2 years ago, who was just like my mother to me. She watched over me while my parents worked to build up the family business.

This is killing me. I miss chatting with John and I miss being able to play alongside him online. I just hope he's not in pain and when it's time, it's quick.

My very good friend who had quite a few family members linger, and linger oh-so-painfully until the end came, once said to me, she wished the same right/option we have for our pets was available for humans,,,

Am just about ready to head up to mom, when I saw the following post from Elmdea:

"The hospice nurse visited this morning. She said John has hours to days.
We both need your prayers and love so much right now. Thank you. <3 "

My post:

"Elmdea,,, You and John have all our Love and prayers,, may his journey be soft and peaceful, and may you find strength to hold his hand along the way. (((hugs)))"

Today's post from Elmdea:

"John is still with us. He hasn't had any water for about a day and a half now.

At this point, the definition of "comfort" for John is about keeping him seriously sedated and pain free. I've resisted this because of my own fear that, due to the drugs, his soul/spirit might get "stuck" once it leaves this poor body behind.

I'm grateful beyond any words I have for a number of you (you know who you are <3) who will be sure his spirit doesn't get stuck after he exits this body. "
