Pretty interesting. The affect came from packaging materials which had been produced near the time of certain tests in the US.

From what I've read Russia did there testing in remote areas that were sparsely populated and never told the locals what was going on. There were supposedly villages where every family had someone born with problems or affected by the fallout.
