I have seen the jaws of life used but not seen a unit like that .that uses a gun powder shell .that seem like a real beast to use and carry around .

Seems like in an emergency, that would be faster than setting up a jaws of life. In some other of his videos they do show firemen using it, so maybe it is marketed as a jaws of life alternative in whatever country they're in.
What drove me crazy watching that is he has a pair of gloves on his belt, but doesn't use them, no ear protection, no eye protection. But he's wearing a denim jacket, so it's all good I guess.

The hydraulic ones are in fact slower but can apply force in both directions and also since its slower less risk of a spark igniting anything. This thing is a good looking tool but not exactly a replacement for jaws of life.
