I just cant think of a good reason to use it on my main box...now my secondary wont take windows but linux works great on it. Got the 486 version of mandrake 7

Red Hat 7 (Fisher)works with all my hardware, even my Microsoft USB mouse, and it's not a 5 year old box. I play Quake 3 and SOF on the box. I'll get Tribes 2 for it as well. If only more games were running on the OS I would go to it permanently as it does everything else I need. I think that is key, getting the games there. Once that starts happening then more support will follow.

No matter what alot of people out there think, games and the folks who play them are the primary driving force behind PC hardware development. No text program or Windows application out there needs a 1.5 P4. Now DOOM3....ahhh yes, that just might need it

why would any proggy/game need a 1.5 p4 when a 1.2 tbird is faster? but I hear what you're sayin

Enough there to keep a man busy.But I do have a windows partition to run B&W,CS and a couple games I cant get for linux.

My hardware isnt bleeding edge but it isnt ancient either and no probs running Drake 7.2.

Contrary to what people here think, the gaming market is irrelevent. The operating system used by businesses are what bring in money for companies like Microsoft. Until GNU/Linux gets Microsoft Office, it will never have a chance of replacing Windows.

I must admit I've (finally? ) begun to realize that GNU/Linux on the desktop would be a bad thing given what a massive pain in the ass it is to maintain a UNIX-like system on a personal workstation.

Kaoru - What do you find funny about that? It's just a matter of time until microsoft will require you to buy their $100-$200 softare and have rediculous CD-Key checks. I've heard in the future they will have an online database with all the CD-Keys; you will have to connect online and give the right CD-Key or you're screwed.

Ok, some might agrue, "I don't have the internet so how can I do it?" Well, I'm sure they would offer some sort of free MSN for a month. Not only will you finally be able to register it, but they are advertising their MSN ISP at the same time. Clever marketing aspect.

I just think soon Microsoft is gonna get outta hand so I like looking at alternatives. I'm sure linux programmers could come up with something very similar to MS Office. But right now, Linux is in its infancy, so to speak. Of course it can't do a lot of things windows can. But I believe it has the potential to Just me thoughts....

I don't think much is known about exactly how Windows XP's registration system works. I've heard things ranging from being unpleasent (e.g., mandatory registration with <font face="lucida calligraphy, cursive">x</font> amount of days) to only OEM and academic editions having mandatory registration.

The problem with being similar to MS Office is that it isn't enough for those who use it for more than word processing.

kenada - I don't have any facts or websites; I can try to look them up but I was told from a friend that really likes linux and keeps pretty up to date with it (I on the other hand, don't really). I was just sayin' something that I heard; but I can definitly believe it happnening sometime (wheather it be with WinXP or later in the future)

I'm just keepin' my options open I guess. Wheather it happens or not isn't too big of a deal right now; it's still fun to see alternatives and play around with 'em. (though I have yet to actually use a machine with it [linux] installed)
