There are a few parts that I feel they would have left out. It seems like they wanted to show off the movie's cool special effects in 2-3 scenes.
I was surprised at how quickly the movie went by. There is almost never an idle moment for you to catch your breath and get ready for the next event. That is always good in a movie, especially when it is 3 hours long.

with 2 more movies comming down one each christmas...this looks to be a pritty cool deal. cant wait for the dvd box seting FOUR years!

OH MY GOD!!!! Did I say "oh my God?" Good. I'll say it again: OH MY GOD!!!
That was THE best movie I have ever watched and yes that includes Aliens by a very fine hair. It met all of my expectations in regards to authenticity, etc. At no point did it feel forced or (thank heaven) cheesy. The effects were without a doubt spectacular, the story follows the book as close as possible for a movie to do and still be engrossing.
Oh, and the Balrog? That this was F_CKING AWESOME!! Words fail me in describing this thing. It is almost worth the price of admission alone.
In fact, now that I settle down a bit, (and believe me the rush I got from this movie has taken a LONG time to ease off), there is only 2 bad things I can say about the movie:
1) The shriek that the Ringwraiths give out is, to put it bluntly, ear splitting. Literally. I HIGHLY suggest ear plugs for this movie if your theater likes to play the volume loud.
2) I have to wait another two YEARS to see the finish.

I thought it was pretty good too but better than Alien, no way. Special effects were good but in the close-up shots looked a little cheesy(too dark and blurry) to me. It does follow the book fairly close but as I expected you'd need about 10 more hours of film to catch you up to the book. I'm really waiting for the last book the Return of the King. Hope it doesn't sound like I was disapointed, I wasn't. If you saw the first LotR movie, that was a disapointment. I'm looking foreward to watching it many times on DVD.

this is an awesome movie...
the sfx complimented the surrounding footage very well...
it was very impressive the wave the cave troll moved so fluidly... the balrog was very impressive also...
i think the opening intro may be one of the best in any movie...
...one question...
this book is book #2...

chottoED, the Hobbit is not part of the LoTR trilogy. You could call it a prequil. The three books are the Fellowship of the Ring, the Two Towers, and the Return of the King. I have another lesser known book by National Lampoon, a parody called Bored of the Rings. Its quite entertaining in a different way.

I was a little worried that they might make him look a little cheesy, but low and behold F$#@@*K NO!
I almost got a chubb when it roared and they showed its head close up with the fire in its throat and the heat waves!
I have to admit also I almost peed myself when they were in Rivendell and Bilbo was craven the ring when he saw it again, and his face changed really quick and he hissed. Holy shinto, I almost ripped my wifes arm off! Anywhooooo no complaints here!

I saw it this Friday and all I can say is awesome. It just did not feel like a 3 hour movie. I guess that lets you know that its a great story with some awesome effects..
Too bad we have to wait until next year for part2.
Definitely gotta see this again since I feel I may have missed some dialog. I did not read the book so some of the middle earth jargon I may not have understood.

Well, first off lemme say I STILL haven't read the books (I have owned Fellowship of the Ring for years and I'm going to start reading the damn thing now!) so I didn't know what to expect in the movie at all. I've heard most of the names before (Gandalf, Frodo, Aragorn, Gimli, Legolas) but storywise didn't know a thing.
I saw it last night, and thought that overall it was a great movie, looking forward to the next 2, but as far as best movie I've ever seen? Nope. My fave's are still The Matrix, Saving Private Ryan, Terminator 2, Gladiator, Braveheart, and The Crow. Whenever a new "epic" movie comes out people get all hyped and say BEST MOVIE EVAR!!! but I dunno, I have to let a movie "sink in" and I like to wait a while before I consider it one of my favorites. Don't get me wrong, I loved it and I'll buy the DVD and all but I'm not ready to call it one of my favorites just yet.
One thing you LotR fans can clear up for me... I was under the impression that Gandalf was an extremely powerful wizard, next to Saruman the most powerful on Middle Earth? Then why didn't we see him hardly use his power in battles? All he did was make some fireworks, summon some bird, and lose a mage fight with Saruman? Whenever they were attacked he didn't do anything magical. The only real show of his power was stopping the Balrog, but then he seemingly dies fighting him anyway? I take it he's not really dead and does more in the next 2 books?

In the stories you truly don't underdtand who Gandalf is untill later in the books he is described! One thing for sure he is older than Elrond!
The Balrog is almost Gandalfs equal, in earlier times there were more, and I believe they were created to best the order Gandalf belonged to. Can't remember though I read those books back in high school. The book, The Silmirilian, covers most of the history before the trilogy takes place.
But trust me Gasndalf was the POOP!
