Some great current & upcoming DVD gems *Near Dark 9/10/02*

Post by blade »

Most of these are older movies and because of that they may be overlooked, but they shouldn't be. All of these I consider movie gems and ones I want for my DVD collection.

The Vikings

Image

Old but great movie with Kirk Douglas, Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh. About the Vikings! If you like Braveheart and/or Spartakus then you'll like this one. ;)

Resident Evil on 7/30/02

Milla as LeeLoo, one more time. :) Not an old movie but thought I'd mention it anyway. :D

Time After Time on 8/06/02

About H.G. Wells going after Jack The Ripper in modern day San Francisco using his time machine. Most entertaining movie with Malcolm McDowell and Mary Steenburgen.

Flaming Star on 8/13/02

Elvis in a very good western playing a half-breed in a role originally made for Marlon Brando.

Return of the Living Dead on 8/27/02

It's a take off on those Romero living dead movies, which I never liked btw. This is dark comedy at it's very best. Haunting and funny.

btw, don't let the dvd cover fool you, there are no green zombies. Well, maybe one that I remember.

The Wanderers on 9/03/02

Very fun movie that takes place in the Bronx 1963, filled with great 50's / 60's music.

Near Dark on 9/10/02

A total classic! One of the best vampire films ever, if not THE best. Many things that were first used in Near Dark were later copied in such movies as Blade and Vampires. This is awesome!! Has great acting from Lance Henriksen, Jenette Goldstein and Bill Paxton, fresh from their roles in Aliens. Speaking of which the director, Kathryn Bigelow, was James Cameron's live in babe and you can see some directing similarities.

Has a bar scene that you will remember well and some great lines like "I hate it when they ain't been shaved" and "I just need a few moments of your time, about as much time as the rest of your lives".

If you like movies such as Blade and Aliens then you will like this one.

---------------

And when the heck is The Entity and Harry and the Hendersons coming to DVD? Those are most eggselent movies too. :)

Any other hidden gems you guys/ghouls suggest?

I loved the Vikings and Near Dark, I noticed Spartacus is out as well as The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy (from 1981) also.

Near Dark is definitely on top of all the vampire movies. It's definitely a must have.

I was thinking about "The Vikings" last weeks, wondering when they were going to release it.
