Greyhound mini review -Apple movie starring Tom Hanks

Post by FlyingPenguin »

Downloaded this from torrents while I'm waiting for the DVD release, and I really enjoyed it. Critics gave it mixed reviews, but mainly for not having any 'creative' cinematography or deep plot. Most audience reviews are very good though.

I think the critics miss the point. This is not like a Brian Depalma cinematic masterpiece, nor should it be. It's directed a lot like a 1950s WWII movie. No character arcs, no deep dives into the psyche of the characters, no artistic long camera shots Ala 1917, just a damn good story told well.

The only digression is a brief flashback to Tom Hanks' character asking his girlfriend to marry him before he ships out, and the rest of the movie takes place in real time.

Hanks is the captain of a destroyer, his first command, escorting a US convoy across the Atlantic. It's about a grueling 48 hours crossing 'The Black Pit': the part of the Atlantic with no air support where German wolf packs prey on convoys.

The movie reminds me of "Das Boot" - it effectively portrays the grueling crossing in a very realistic way. Along with Hanks and his crew you suffer through the bitter cold, the terrifying nights, the confusion of combat, the lack of sleep, and young inexperienced crew on their first combat mission.

For naval combat fans, it's a fairly realistic representation of combat.

I can highly recommend it.

"Turns out I’m 'woke.' All along, I thought I was just compassionate, kind, and good at history. "
