the 97 accord blew a ring. Time for a new car as the cost to fix outweighs the value. I am looking at the new civic any opinions on it? or possibly the corrola? I do a minimum of 15K miles per year.

really? it would cost more to get it fixed? how many miles are on the engine... i am assuming a ton if it slipped a ring out. I dont know this... but depending on the engine type selling it as a core might be worth quite a bit.

junk yard engine with 64K miles no warranty = 850 + Labor
rebuilt engine with 1 yr warranty = 2250.00 + labor
I paid 4000.00 for the car book is only 6000.00 max.
current bad engine has 119,000 miles on it.

hmm... well i would not advise a junk yard engine unless you half ass rebuild it before putting it in. So yeah i guess its about done.

if you are looking within the 12k-15k range for a new car, then you definitely can't go wrong with the civic or toyota. both are reliable cars.

my personal choice would be the civic, but if i was looking for someting a little different and stylish i'd go for the Mazda 3 :)

mazda 3 or 6. Very nice cars.

Civic over toyota only because of price and features. But that mazda 3 is awsome.

I'll give you a different opinion but it depends on how much you like the car and its overall shape. To me, 120K isn't alot of miles and most Honda engines easily outlast that if well maintained. Many junk yards will also warranty used engines. We deal with one that specializes in used Volvo parts and they somehow give "lifetime" warranties on their used engines (for serious internal issues) and even pay labor if one of their used motors isn't good when shipped.

$850 for a used engine with 64K doesn't sound bad to me at all and I'd bet that you could find someone who'ld swap that reasonably too as I doubt it's very difficult. Let's say it costs you $1500 installed, compare that to new or newer used car payments today.
.....but then I'm still driving my 20 yr old car with 272K miles on it and not even remotely thinking of buying a newer car.

Dude the nex Civic is nice, I drove one about 1 week ago I freaking love the mazda 3 5door.

valid point, I think I will go down thais road drive it a little longer and at least if i decide to trade her in it will fetch me blue book value, vs next to nothing for junking it. It just makes more sense financially to reinvest 1200 - 1500 into it. Which trade in is about ~5000.00

What's wrong with us? :) I am driving 1990 735iL with 257K miles on the clock. And loving it(except the gas mileage :)

Beleive it or not this car is still down. Been too busy to get 'er done. So far bought the engine and 1 set of gaskets and a Oil filter and am up to 950.00. Still want to replace the timing belt and water pump (might as well while it is out of the car(so much easier)) and a full tune up. The engine was from a rear ended 97 accord and the engine had 64K miles on it. Came with the alternator and every thing you can think of hanging off the mofo (Starter, air box, hoses, etc.)

Hope you get it going soon. It probably gets good mileage too, something I wish I could relate to.
My car doesn't have any resale value now either BUT with older cars, you can't really look at it like that. I weigh out the fact that my car is paid for, NO payments and doesn't cost me much to keep alive. If I opted to buy another car, even an old beater that gets good mileage, I'd still be costing me alot more than where I'm now at as it's not easy finding good, inexpensive used cars anymore. I don't think I'd ever buy a new car unless I got alot of money all of the sudden, like it falls into my hands (can happen).

Yeap, Sounds like your Gettin there. No Payments would be really nice. Timming belts should be changed every 60,000 and should be a must fo junk yard motors.
If it has wheels it can be fixed... unless it is a
