I can't believe Toyota didn't keep this under the radar and just issue a TSB.(Reuters) - Toyota Motor Corp will pay to fix about 650,000 Prius models worldwide for a coolant pump glitch that could cause the top-selling hybrid to overheat and lose power, the automaker said.
The repair campaign covers Prius cars for the model years 2004 to 2007. The bulk of the cars, or 378,000 units, are in the United States.
The Japanese automaker said it had not received any reports of accidents or injuries from problems with the pump, which circulates coolant for the hybrid system.
Major automakers, including Toyota, often conduct repair campaigns that are separate from safety recalls filed with U.S. regulators in cases where they determine that a defect does not present a safety risk.
Toyota said the design of the electric water pump let air bubbles enter the system, slowing coolant circulation and allowing the hybrid's components to heat up.
The heating up of the components could trigger a warning light. If left unattended, the Prius could overheat and drop into a "fail-safe" mode where engine power would be reduced, Toyota said.
Toyota said it would begin notifying owners of the Prius repair campaign in the United States in early December.
The automaker has used a different pump design on the Prius hybrid since that time and uses a different type of pump for other hybrids, Toyota spokesman John Hanson said.
Toyota will cover the cost of the repairs, including more than $100 in labor for each Prius fixed at a U.S. dealership.
The repair campaign on one of the best-known Toyota vehicles comes at the end of a year in which the top global automaker has struggled to distance itself from a damaging series of recalls and concerns about its quality management.
Since last November, Toyota has recalled about 14 million vehicles worldwide, including about 11 million in the United States.

i've had many, many recalls done on my toyota product in the past year...all preventative and no actual problems for me personally before the work was done. it might work to toyota's advantage to be completely transparent with all this, since if they do, other manufacturers may also be...then the quality of the products will be more noticable (by that, i mean, watch the domestic companies squirm).

iI be so tired of going to the dealer for recalls. I think I'D start riding a bike or walking and just sell my car if i could get away with it . i know one guy who own's a toyota pickup .and at the end of this last summer they Toyota replaced the whole frame on it for him under a recall . they replaced more parts to do to the frame getting replaced like brake lines i think . he did get a free rental .but it was fun seeing this was his work truck and they only had a sub compact for him to use . kind of hard to haul a sheet of drywall in a car little less a sub compact !
the Last time I was Talking to myself . I got into such a heated argument . that is why I swore I never talk to that guy again. you know what it worked now no buddy talking to me.

....and for FREE to the owner. If it's beyond repair, they buy it for alot more than it's worth. If you had a rusted out US made vehicle (which happens all the time here in the winter 'salt belt') you're SOL, just needing to buy another car at your expense and junking your old car getting nothing for it.Toyota replaced the whole frame on it for him under a recall
b-man1, it's not that those sensors are loose but it's either the sensor itself leaking or its aluminum seal. We haven't seen one leak yet. Toyota hasn't yet released exact details on that yet but either way, it's not difficult to replace.
The brake master cyl seal's also quick and easy to do so one can wait for either or both if need be.
