Volkswagons! Or other Econo Cars!!

Post by Sexy Pid »

I have recently started looking at VW's as my main transportation unit. I have been told, and I believe they cost way too much to fix. Can anyone back this up, or (I hope) can you prove me wrong? Also, are there cars out there that would match that of a VW, remember, I am a 16-year old student, money plays a huge role.
Yes, this post wasn't very informative, but, please, help me out, peeps!~ :)

Depends what your price range is. You can get a cheap MK2 Supra (1982-1986.5) for about $500-1000 and put another grand or so and have a nice car :) So far we've spent $2,300 total for my Supra. That is the initial $500 for the car, another $500 for power steering, another $500 for alignment/strut work, and another $800 for apearance (body work + paintjob) So for about 1500-2k you can have yourself a "sporty" car, yet it still gets good gas milage :) I'm guessing mine gets about 25-28mpg. Damn thing runs forever....

Eitherway, I still figure for about $1500-2500 (depending on what condition you find it in and what all you want done with it) you can get a nice car :) I just got mine back from the shop a few days ago and am letting the paint cure. Just got done cleaning hte interior today and will hopefully take some pics of it here in a week or so. Still gotta do some touchups :)

If you are concerned about insurance costs think old, big, and ugly. :)

If you have rich parents or a good job and MUST have an import, buy a new one with a good warranty and sell it in a year or two.

What I've seen, all import parts cost at least 2 or 3 times what the good old american ones do.

"What I've seen, all import parts cost at least 2 or 3 times what the good old american ones do."

Pretty much true. I've been an import dealer tech for over 20 yrs now, own a Volvo and two American cars and I'm always amazed by how relatively in-expensive the parts cost for my American cars when compared to my Volvo (very costly parts).
I've worked on Japanese cars too over the years and their parts are just as expensive as the European cars. VW parts won't be any cheaper.

If you're seriously into VWs, I've heard that their new turbo diesel bug gets about 45mpg and costs around $20K (or so?) and if that's true, it'd probably be a fairly "affordable" new car. Something to look into.

I think the reason new import parts are so expensive is because...well...you have to import them :) If ya get an old beater you can get all the parts you need from a junkyard and fix it up pretty nice for not a lot. I got a door, two tail-light lenses and a bunch of misc. bull for my car for about $250. Yeah, sure, it costed half the price of the car, but it was worth it :D

lol :) I'm not sayin' mine is the fastest car in the world but it's got some get-up and go, which is all I need for being my first car. It handles really well also, so I can do some stupid shit and get away with it :p

BTW, It's a new color now. I really gotta get these pics developed and show ya guys the car. Looks damn nice (to me atleast) with the paintjob and body work done to it.
