OK no problem. Burnt direct clutches(common) or broken dampener plate in the torque converter. Now fix it! :E

rofl

yeah, i didnt want to thread jack (cause you know someone would have to be crazy or mentally retarded to thread hi-jack one of blades threads :p )

Car : 1988 Mercury Grand Marquis
AOD overdrive 4-speed
5.0 (302) v-8 engine

When I drive, if I get up to about 40mph, the trans would just drop into neutral. I feel it kick from first to second gear at around 15-20 mph

So thats about it, i cant get into 3rd gear or over 40mph without getting dropped into neutral. So to combat that, I coast down to about 35ish, shift to N for a second then shift back into Drive and accelerate.

So you think its either the burnt direct cluthes or a broken dampener plate?
Know how much something like that would run to get fixed?

More than likely it's burnt direct clutches. I really haven't seen much of a problem with the dampener plates since the early eighties units with the two piece face on the torque converter.

As far as cost goes it would depend on the area you're in and the what the market there is paying. Around here in the Austin area, which is about the most expensive place to live in Texas, you will pay somewhere between $800 to 1300 depending on what all is wrong with the unit and who fixes it.

Take note that if the clutches are burnt so bad that the transmission won't take third gear it is very possible that you've also damaged the steels and perhaps the pessure plate in the direct drum.

its a land boat!

i love this car. Great to drive
so I am kinda saddened that this had to happen. So I made a decision that instead of spending over $1000 to get it fixed only to have problems pop up cause its an old car, i will just try to stick it out a bit longer adn get something newer

Something between a 95-97. I would like to get a Explorer, Blazer, or Jimmy. But I am also looking into trucks with the extended cabs
