Rodeo PC

Post by sheerdark »

Hello all!

I figured some of you guys might like to see my CarPC. I have been wanting to do this for some time, but wasn't sure about a few things.

You can read all about my project and see more pictures at
my website

Here's a sample of the pictures:

Computer under the passenger seat - seat pulled all the way up - the motherboard is completely covered when the seat is pushed all the way back. I have a small case on the way now.

It's not everything that I was hoping for - but it works for now. I only had to purchase the Lilliput, so having this setup saved me from having to go outside my budget. I am saving up now to purchase a faster computer, hopefully a VIA unit. Being a broke college student really stinks, expecially with a 9 month old daughter to take care of. So, this project will most likely stay this way for a while now. Questions or comments are welcome.

Thanks for taking a look. ;)

thats nice. So whats the regular head unit doing? just using it as an amp? And what this Lilliput thing? the screen? and is it a touch screen?

I too have been thinking of doing something like this.

Wow! Beautiful! Nice website too! (more info at his site Pugs)

Is that piece that holds the touchscreen original? Just woundering how the heck you got it to fit so perfect, like it belongs there.

Thanks for the compliments, guys.

Yes, the piece that holds the touchscreen came with my car. It is the original radio bezel that I "modified" to fit the touchscreen, but I didn't have to modify it much. I simply cut off one piece on the back that was used for "structural integrity" because it was in the way of the buttons on the front of the touchscreen - you can see pictures of the only cut I had to make on my website. The Rodeo has a double din opening for the radio, as it came with a 6 disc in-dash changer radio with a tape player from the factory. The 7" Lilliput Touchscreen is just about the same size as a double din opening, so I ordered it and crossed my fingers. As you can see, the plastic frame on the screen shows just a little bit at the top of the opening for the old radio, but it is barely noticable. I wanted a factory look, without spending the time to mold it into my dash with bondo - as others have done - and I think it came out pretty good. Thanks again for the compliments - I put a lot of time into getting everything just right, so you words bring a smile to my face. In time, I may find a way to make all the silver at the top disappear, but for now - it doesn't bother me too much.

Yeah, if you have any more questions about the install that you couldn't find on my webpage, just ask me here. I will add anything that I might have overlooked to the website..just let me know. I bought my Lilliput touchscreen on Ebay - as most of the vendors in the US charge more than the Authorized dealers on the net. Thanks for your compliments, as they are quite welcome here :)

There is a better touchscreen, from what I've heard, made by Xenarc - but it is much more expensive than the Lilliput. The only problem that most people claim with the Lilliput is the fact that it has a bit of a glare when put in direct sunlight - but I think that is more of a problem that plagues LCD screens - especially screens with a touchscreen overlay. The picture quality of the Lilliput is amazing for its price range - I am not disappointed in my purchase! If anyone has any more questions, or wants more pictures or information, just post here - I'll check back daily and post updates.

*Edit* I forgot to answer one of your questions. Yes, my Kenwood head unit is used only as an amplifier - mainly to utilize the amps already factory installed in my car. I purchased the auxiliary input adapter from crutchfield to have RCA inputs for my computer sound. From what I have heard, you either have to use a head unit or regular car amplifiers in conjunction with your PC soundcard or else the sound might not be up to par - which makes sense as most PC soundcards (I'm using onboard sound) don't output music at a very usable volume. I know a lot of people just remove the head unit altogether and install amplifiers, but I didn't want to go that route, as it costs more money and I already had the Kenwood unit from my old Z. As I said on my website, you can get more information at mp3car.com - that's where I got most of my final information from. I had been wanting to do this for a few years now, but I just didn't have the room in the Z - now with my "family car" I had the room and the initiative...I think it turned out ok. Good luck with yours - and be sure to post some pictures if you do end up doing it yourself!

well about the only one was about how much to expect to pay for the lillput thing. the rest i might have laying around.

I thopught if putting one in and using a parellel LCD 4x40 or 4x20 to display text and do a simple MP3 player... but with a regular head unit that can do it costing ~200 it makes all the troubble not worth going through. But that being able to play movies and MUSIC VIDEOS would be worth the trouble.

I paid $291 shipped for the Lilliput on Ebay. I bought it from the seller translinks. He seemed to be a very honest seller. I thought that my box had not come with a remote - and he shipped another one out to me at no cost and let me keep it when I finally found the remote "hidden" in the box. As a sidenote, Lilliput is a small asian company, so they do not have specific boxes for every unit - this scared me initially. I got a Lilliput box that was for a different screen - but the company assured me that this was their practice. Everything else was included in the box, including the remote that I have to use to turn the unit on.

I also used stuff that I had lying around, but I am looking to upgrade in the future. I can't play DIVX movies very well with my older PC, but I really used it for a temporary solution to test the idea and make sure nothing drastic happened to the PC. I was worried about the GA heat, but it doesn't seem to be an issue, yet. It might become more of an issue with a faster processor, but I doubt it - as no one else seems to have problems. I think the highest temperature that a car gets up to is 110 F or so - I think that temp is well within the specs of most PC hardware.

I agree about the trivial nature of the LCD Car PC. Before putting the PC in my car, I tried using one of the in dash double din monitors and DVD player - and the interface was just annoying. So I sold that model and bought the Lilliput and I like this, paired with configurable software, much better. I definately like the idea of being able to do anything that the PC can do - including internet on the road, GPS, radio through a USB FM radio, DVD playing, and other PC format movie playing, as well as MP3 playing. I can store all 30+ GB of my sorted MP3's in one place - without having to worry about burning them all to DVD-R's. It is very convenient - I don't have to go searching for my DVD-R discs now. It seems to be safer than searching for CD's too..it only requires that you look down for a short period of time, rather than much longer for the alternative. If you are seriously considering doing this, but have any reservations, I suggest you look at mp3car.com and browse the forums - specifically the completed installs section....everyone does their install different and you can get lots of ideas. They also have a forum dedicated to the software that can be used. Currently I have 3 programs loaded for my CarPC and am still trying to decide which interface I like better. I look forward to getting GPS and internet implemented for my system, too....but that will have to come along when I get my faster computer - and when my case finally gets here.

I think this is one of the most rewarding projects I've done so far - but it was also pretty time-consuming to do all the research and planning. Once I got started, it didn't take much time at all, because I had already worked through my ideas in my head. Good Luck! Let me know if you have any more questions.

Thanks! I have actually done some updating to my CarPC system in the last couple of weeks. I even have a Belkin Bluetooth GPS unit on the way! Check the updates out here.
