Avalanche DTC Retrieval

Post by Key Keeper »

Anyone here know the proceedure for manually pulling the DTC's on a 03 GM vehicle? My avalanche has onstar but I aint paying for that stuff when I would barley use it. Isnt there a way to pull the trouble codes out through either the Info center (instrament cluster display) or through the climate controller? I always used a modis or otc scanner for this but now that Im no longer in that industry im at a loss here.

many auto parts stores pull the codes for free. Auto Zone does it I know.

Yeah I was just curious if there was a way I could do it manually. I looked online but found nil. Going to have it scanned at my old job, they got new Modis and I want to see whats wrong with my keyless entry as well.

Unlike the pre OBDII systems which could be jumpered to access codes you will need a scanner to retieve any information.

Thats what I figured. This damn truck got so many gadgets on it, thought maybe one of them would be of use. I remember the old caddy's that could be accessed through the ac controls and some fords were this way to. Hell the stuff Im used to seeing now is scannable using just the cruise controls on the vehicle (International Navistar). Hopefully that new Modis can access my keyless entry module though. My wifes been on my ass to fig out whats wrong with it for almost a year. I fig damn, just stick the key in the door ya lazy ......

I've been out of the automotive trade since 1992 and am in the dark on these newer computer vehicles. I found a forum that deals with your type of questions with answers from mechanics etc. Maybe someone can help you there.

Well just took it to friends shop and scanned it with a snap on scanner. Turns out "lean bank 1-2". Guessin its bout time for a fuel filter or possibly fuel pressure regulator. As for the keyless entry, guy at dealer ship told me how to program it without a tech II. Just hold down lock button on drivers door with key off, turn key on and off till horn honks (puts it in program mode), then just hold down the lock and unlock button on the keypad and wait 12 seconds. The doors will lock and unlock automaticly when done. What sux though is my truck has "driver 1" "driver 2" settings and I only got one keypad. If I had two, I could set my mirrors/seats/radio/ac the way I wanted it and would all be set for me before I ever got in the truck when I unlocked it with keypad.

If a fuel filter doesn't solve the problem, it could be an O2 sensor.

Leave it to GM to come up with a procedure like that to check codes. Must be trying to out do Ford and Chrysler in stupity. :lol

"Lean Bank one" and "lean bank 2", would have to be both right and left upstream O2 sensors and doubt both would go out at exact same times. Downstream O2's would render DTC for "catalyst inefficiency bank 1/2"

As for the code retrieval, I had to use a scanner Justlookin. I wished there was a proceedure that I could have used to get the DTC's. The "program mode" proceedure was for the keyless entry. Almost all the auto manufacturers have a proceedure like this to reset the factory installed keyless entry. I remember working at AAMCO and having to reset the Nissan facory alarms and keyless entry. Lock and unlock the passenger door with the key 3 times to reset them. It just sucks that they dont print it in the owners manual or on their websites. But then again how would they make money if the average socker mom could fix her own car?...

I agree on the O2 theory. Rare for both to go at same time. Most O2 codes are caused by other sensers or engine related problems, misfires etc..
Don't know what problem you are having or if you just get a lite with no noticable drivability changes that you are tracking down. All I no is that alot of things can cause O2 Codes to pop up.

Yeah, O2 codes are a pain in the a**. Cold it has a very small vibration so it prolly needs a tune up as well. 80,000 on factory plugs/wires/belts/ect. Its had a very easy life though.
