Ferrari Italia = $230K Ford Pinto?

Ferrari is recalling its new 458 Italia model after several vehicles were reported to have burst into flames.
A Ferrari spokesperson told CNNMoney.com has that the luxury supercar is being recalled in order to make modifications to the wheelhouse assembly...{more}

At least the Pinto had to be hit in the rear first.

I don't think I'd just be standing there knowing the gas tank could explode at any moment.
As for the Pinto, although it was truely a POS, most cars from that era (and longer) had gas tanks in that same area and station wagons had them just behind the quarter panel, not much safer really.

Yeah my 1968 wagon had the tank right behind the right rear quarter panel. Just asking for it.

I once had a '74 Chevy Malibu wagon (winter beater) and when I first got it, it had an air pump with a bad diverter valve and when revved up, on decel flames would come out of the exhaust pipe, right below the gas tank on the left side. I removed the emissions equip., solved that but later the gas tank started leaking (replaced) but things could have gotten ugly with flames and a gas leak.

i loved my 1970 pinto.only got rid of it becouse. the starter need a new bendix and didnt want to drop the front steering to replace it .after reading in the chiltons manual . also didn't have a hoist to work on it at the time /or the money to pay to have it replaced for me .
