when looking at new cars .what do you look at more. lets say your looking for a SUV for the heck of it.
if there was 2 MPG diffrents between model A over model B .
but model B looked better to you . both SUV had all the same options and color and price . would you take Looks over MPG.

I'd go for MPG assuming that it's not a stupid ugly vehicle. It's just hard to ignore the fact that after a year that 2mpg = about $100 in gas. Of course, if it goes the opposite direction & the other vehicle is stupid great looking, I'd have a hard time as well.

I would give up the $100 a year for a much better looking vehicle..

Neither! I absolutely hate car payments. I'd rather throw money out the window. 14 years ago I vowed never to take a loan on a car. Cash only and nothing over 2 grand. 5 years ago I bought a 95 cherokee for 500 and it lasted me until this fall when I discovered the frame had rusted in half. It had oner 260,000 on it. A bout 2 years ago I bought a 2001 Regal for a grand. No rust on the body or undercarriage, runs great handles like a dream. The only problems with it are the electronic odometer doesnt work (needs new cluster panel) and the fuel gauge isnt accurate under half a tank.

I'd rather have a car that doesnt cost a lot and gets 18mpg than spend big bucks on something that get 30mpg.

Same here. I've never owned a new car and the newest used car I ever bought was 8 yrs old when I bought it. That car lasted me another 14 yrs. I replaced that with a newer version of the same over 2 yrs ago, it's now a 17 yr old car but has relatively low miles so I think it'll last me another 12-15 yrs.
Doesn't get great mileage but I own 3 cars, no car payments and cheap insurance too (full coverage).
There are always newer cars that I wouldn't mind having but unless ALOT of money just falls into my hands, I can't justify it.

my current newer car was the end of "new" cars for me. i got a great price on it since it was an 07 sitting on the dealer lot in late 08...so an unusually good opportunity for a new car.

i've been looking with my g/f for a new car for her. she finally decided to consider cars (she is an SUV lover) and we checked out the used BMW 5-series...talk about depreciation! several of them are selling for less than half of their MSRP in three years. glad i'm not the one buying those new. we're talking $60K sticker priced cars that are selling well under $30K...that's a big chunk of depreciation to swallow.
