hey EH...what do you estimate it takes to replace a "cable assembly" for the GS350 sunroof? my gf's stopped opening and the dealer here just quoted her $3,300 to replace that single part. i don't think the entire sunroof (including all parts) comes close to that cost. that seems beyond crazy to me.

I think you have to remove the headliner to replace it. On modern cars it's a pain. However, $3500 is bs unless you have to replace the entire sunroof. You ought to see what the part costs by itself and then maybe find a local place to install it.

Sounds like a Lexus tax.

The part looks like it's around $300 to $700. Your going to have to call a dealer to get the part number and then shop around. If it really costs $3,500 to fix this I'd either leave it alone or trade it in.

yeah, i can understand labor being a lot (and lexus tax!), but this one really seems out of line. obviously we won't pay that much to fix it, but i want to make sure they are not just trying to overcharge. the best part is they have previously worked on the sunroof due to loud rattles...three times. of course, everything they did in the past has "nothing to do with this" and now the warranty expired a few months ago. digging through paperwork tonight to see what parts they replaced last time, etc.

I had the same issue with my wife's VW Jetta. A great car, but at 40k miles, the cats needed to be replaced. Cost? $3000+ and it was not covered under warranty. Told the wife lets go car shopping. We traded it in for a Honda Accord.

I can't blame you. Most manufactures cover emissions related issues up to 60K or even 100K miles.

I'm guessing that they quoted you the price for a complete SR assy (minus glass). Haven't done cables in a long time but it's time consuming and the seats, headliner has to be removed so there's a lot of labor involved. Cables and labor alone shouldn't cost that much. Maybe they have good reason to believe the problem is worse than needing just cables? They should be able to tell you parts cost and labor.
