getting me amd rig need help on cpu choice?

okay i am getting me an amd xp rig. What i want to know before i build this system is what is the best overclocker amd xp cpu out there. What is the best stepping to get? Do you know where i can get good prices on amd xp cpu's? Unlocking the amd xp cpu does that void your 3 year warranty with amd? Should i go oem or retail.

1600+ or 1700+'s are usually the best OCers. got my 1700 at 2100+ easly enough. Just go with a store that sells alot they always have the latest steppings like tcwo.com thats where I always buy my CPU's from.

what greg said about the 1600s and 1700s - if you perform irreversible surgery on the cpu, it's taps for your warranty - there are a couple of ways to unlock xps - last one i got was an 1600+ from newegg on there $55 special which is hard to beat - i got aroia y stepping - i can't get mine much past 150 fsb on my ak35gt2 but predator has his almost up to 1.9 - check overclockers.com cpu db for more info on the various steppings - newegg has always done well by me and shipping is frequently free/cheap - i get their fedex supersaver in 3 days calif to w va - looks like that epox 8ka5-whatever is the hottest oc board at the moment

Newegg has some good batches of 1600+'s right now if you feel like overclocking. TCWO has great service but the last XP I got from the ( 1700+ AGOGA stepping) wasnt a good overclocker.

If your going to get an XP 1600, why not jsut get a tbird 1.33 for less, and overclock that?
sure it's a little hotter, but you don't have to unlock anything, so you won't need to set your fsb so high. I've found out first hand upping the fsb isn't good... it causes a lot of lockups, even when the temps are normal. i sugjest you just pay the $50 and get the 2100+ or 2200+
Then you don't need to worry about the cpu overheating, crashing, and you still have a nice warrenty. I'm not sure if this still exists, but at http://www.googlegear.com they had a deal on a XP 2200+ for under $150, OEM of course, but OEM is the way to go. Good luck getting a retail cpu and using the retail fan

(doesn't work) Personally, i'd just wait til the hammer comes out (64 bit), vbecause you don't gain much off of 500MHz anyways when the rest of the world is 64 and your still 32.

must be your system man, cause I have one system here been running 150fb for over a year no probs and mine is usually at 160. you might want to check out your bios and clock your ram back or something. but really many many friends of mine jsut oc there fsb with out any probs. Taht and the 1.33 doesnt have sse and is generaly slightly slower.

newegg.com has 1600's for like 55 bucks... Most right now are AROIA-Y's... 1.4 gig chip and mines is running 1.9 gigs without a hiccup... Hows that for overclocking? lol 181 FSB chip is still locked.

Actually Newegg currently has the 1600+ AGOIA core, but it is also ( and some say better because it requires less voltage) as good as AROIA for overclocking.

For a cpu I'd suggest either the xp 1600 + or the 2000+. The 1600 oc's well from what all I've seen while the 2000 is 96 shipped from newegg, or 94 at twco. And their shipping is usually low cost.

For a mobo I'd suggest the Gigabyte GA-7VAX, VIA KT400 chipset 8X AGP ATX or the Gigabyte GA-7VAXP.

Others I'd consider are the ABIT KD7,VIA KT400 chipset and some of the new ones from Epox.

Newegg or http://www.tcwo.com are 2 of the best places to order those from.

ACtually right now i wouldn't recommend a Kt400 board to my worst enemy... Via botched this one pretty bad with the memory issues... It isn't too bad but you can only run one stick of PC3200 on kt400 boards. Guess 2 sticks of it won't run correct. There's an article on it at amdmb.com If you have 1 stick it will be fine for 200FSB but if your like me and have 2 x 256 you'll be poked. Note this is only when your at 200FSB also... Supposedly it works just fine from 133 to 166 but the closer u get to 200 it starts having problems. Only advantage Kt400 will have is teh 8x AGP and 2.0 USB as well as a 1/6th divider... If you don't need that i'd recommend sticking with the Kt333 line of boards. Newegg right now has the AROIA's i just got one a week ago or so. The AROIA's arethe ones that require less voltage. Mine will run 166 FSB at 1.85v's where as the AGOIA i had needed 1.95 v's to run at 166. I've got mine cranked up though so...

i think i might order me one today the xp 1600 agoia. when the new barton cpu's come out then i will upgrade lol lol.

do you guys think sk6 is good enough to kool the sucker down or should i consider getting a new heatsink.

dam i cant find the special anymore on newegg but they do have AGOGA Stepping** AMD ATHLON XP 1900+ AGOGA/266 FSB PROCESSOR CPU - OEM 1900+/ 1.60GHz

for 95 bux. Any luck with these????

Gameve has a batch of 1600+ AGOIA 0213's according to pricewatch. The 0213 is probably one of the best AGOIA cores, so you may wanna consider that. Plus its only $54 w/ free shipping.
