Need serious help....

Post by cjinx »

I just traded another PCAbuser for a Abit KT7-Raid board and it will not boot my 1.2ghz T-bird. Is 1gig the limit for the board? Or is there a bios update for it? Even if there is a bios update, I can't do it until I buy another cpu to boot the machine, right? Anyways, any help would be appreciated. I hope the cpu isn't just "dead"......Thanks

chris i had the board running my bird at 1.3 the whole time i had it. did you double check all the cables and especially the one for the power switch. i've left that one off before and like to never figured out what was wrong. i hope there is nothing else wrong. if you cant get it and want to send it back for me to check i'll pay the shipping both ways and if the board is dead i'll help you get a new one.

No, actually, the board gets power. There's just no boot sequence or anything. I turn on the power and everything comes on...fans, cdrom drives, the whole nine...But the monitor shows no picture...IS this a dead cpu or what? I've never actually come into contact with one so I wouldn't know. Anways, I tried to clear the BIOS 'cause I thought that maybe you were overclocking, but that didn't work either...Oh well. Maybe I can find someone else with a mobo that can test out the cpu for me...

Ahh, I just blew a 1.2g cpu Thursday. sounds like you may have done the same, yours is the same symptoms as mine. My heatsink slipped or something, and the cpu burn out. I took it out of the socket, and only the corner had ASII. A sad day indeed.

yeah i was overclocking but only at 104 fsb. but you said you cleared the cmos so i guess that cant be it. can you get into the bios at all? how did you store the chip while you were waiting on my board to arrive? i've never had anything to fall prey of static(knock on wood) but i guess that is a possibility. i would try taking it all out and check to cpu and reseat it and try again. i wish you the best. that would really suck to go through all this just to switch boards. :(

I'm not sure if this' even related, but maybe try clearing the cmos, y'know, unplug & take the battery out.

EDIT: Nevermind, I see you tried it already :(

G'luck

Actually, I didn't try the "battery removal" method. I'll try it tomorrow and see if it works. Any specific time limit it should be out? 1 minute or 1 hour?

Take the battery out and short the neg and pos together. That will drain any juice left over. I've never tried it and would only recommend it at your own RISK! lol I'll be gettin' my 1.2 tomorrow. I have a 900 i'd be willing to sell for cheap :)

I had same problem with my Abit KT7A. I had to pull the ATX cable off and take the battery out and let it sit for 15 min. Then it worked after that. Made me a nervous wreck that day

There is a 3 pin fan plugin that you need to have your cpu fan plugged into for the board to boot at all, I believe. Take a look at the manual that is where I found it.

I am sure you checked all the cables, but I once had a similar prob and it was a loose power connector at the floppy. It was on, but when i pulled it and reseated it, the system worked.

good luck...
