Athlon XP and motherboards

Do you need a specific motherboard to take advantage of the new AthlonXP line of CPU's? Or is it compatible with all socket-a boards? I'm thinking of upgrading and with the introduction of the AthlonXP I thought I might get it. the 1.33GHz XP is about the same price as the 1.4GHz Athlon. I haven't read any reviews yet really, but I'd like to think that the new features outweighs the slight MHz difference

Just curious if they require any new motherboard or anything.
Sorry, I've been out of the light for a while

You'll have to check out the various mfgrs BIOS updates. I know the KK266 series ( VIA KT133a) DO support the AThlon XP but you need the 0622 BIOS update in order for them to do so.

Alright, thanks. I didn't know if the CPU was based on some new architechture which made it so that it needed a new chipset and all that, or not. Thanks

Yeah, with a bios update the 8K7A's and KG7's all support XP's

Definitely check out the mobo websites, cause some will absolutely not work with XP's. Even with a bios change. Usually the older KT133 and even a few 133a's.

Thanks guys. I've looked at several motherboards and I ran across the MSI KT266Pro2-RU (onboard raid via promise controller) and it looks like a nice motherboard. I basically just want a motherboard that supports DDR, RAID, and the new XP processor. This one does all of the above.

Prolly a pretty good choice. Fast chipset and MSI generally = stability.

Yep, from what I know the only difference between the Pro2 and the Pro2-RU is the RAID feature (via the promise contoller) Hey nexus, let me know how you like that board. I've never used MSI before and am curious how it is with stability, speed, etc. I've read some reviews, but they aren't always accurate and it always helps to hear "first" hand

seems Extreamly nice so far. bios has Many OC'er friendly options....like adding more juice to your Ram, Lots of ram speed options, Easy ociability. all in all Nice board so far...and it is Red so that is neet.

The NON-RAID version of that MSI board is what AMD was giving away with the XP 1800+ so it must be okay. I wish they have give me the RAID version but a free AthlonXP combo is nothing to complain about
