I just received my replacement hard drive from Maxtor and trying to get
it to install with no luck at all
I have a Dragon + And Athlon 1700+ XP Windows XP
I have my CD and DVD set on
IDE 1 (set Master/Slave)
CDRW on
IDE 2 (master)
Boot drive is a WD 20g on
IDE 3 works good set for( MASTER)
Storage drive is a Maxtor 6L080L4 80g ATA133 7200rpm
IDE4 (master)
The 80g drive detects in the Promise Bios just fine Windows XP finds the drive
and trys to install it but keeps telling me it could not install the drive
An error occured durring the instalation of this device
one of the filter drivers installed for this device is invaild
If I look in device manager it shows the drive yellowed out but I can go to
My Computer or Explorer and read and write to the drive ??
I had a 30G Maxtor installed and pulled it to install the 80g and the 30g
worked fine I have tried everything I can think of with no luck

If its your only device on that channel remove the jumper.
Just remenbered I did hear about some "problems with > 80gb drives" but don't recall the fix. Google might turn up something for ya.

I have a 10gig Maxtor that I had problems with on my Dragon. I had it hooked up to the 2sd IDE prot and it would detect but I could not read from it or write to it. Turned out I had to have the jumper set to "Cable Select" for it to work. Not your exact problem but maybe it will help.

Well I tried everything I could think of and then some

I even started having the same problem with my Boot Drive(20g W/D)
after moving things around
I finaly did a full install of XP and the drives are installed BUT if I move either of my
hard drives I end up with the same problem all over ?
I tried setting them a Master and Cable select with NO change
this is a very weird problem to say the least
I can move my CD rom DVD or CDRW with NO problems redetecting and installing
I only have problems with the hard drives

just wondering...
are you using the winXP built in promise drivers? or the latest ones...
also do you have the latest BIOS flash...

Have not updated the Bios from what was in when I received the board from
Newegg I have installed the newest Promise Drivers...If I move my drives from IDE3 &4 to
IDE 1 and 2 I will have the same problem so it is not a problem
with the promise controler
I did a fresh install of XP I had the drives connected as follows
IDE 1 W/D 20 g Boot
IDE 2 Maxtor 80g
IDE 3 CD rom & DVD
IDE 4 CDRW\
With fresh install all drives were detected and installed but my CDRW software could not find
my cdrw on IDE 4 so no problem I would switch them
IDE 1 CD & DVD
IDE 2 CDRW
IDE 3 Boot W/D 20g
IDE 4 80g Maxtor
After moving them All the CD drives were detected and installed just fine
BUT My W/D and
Maxtor were not installing

now both Hard drives were giving the same error
So after a couple days of screwing with it I finaly reinstalled XP
AGAIN
after fresh install EVERYTHING detected and installed and as of right now they are working
but I have to have something wrong here if I can not move a hard drive with out
having problems reinstalling it

First thing I'd do is check the IDE cables. Might be the prob. That happened to me. If you move the HDDs to a different channel, do it with all other devices ( opticals ) disconnected. Just the bare minimum initially. If you already did this stuff just disregard.
Not for nuthin' but if it's a new install ( fresh OS etc) , you may be better off getting it up and running on the standard IDE controller ( RAID controller disabled ) first and then once you have the OS, drivers, updates loaded then shutdown, switch it over to RAID controller which of course you would enable at this point and see if it works. That's provided your HDD is able to be detected. I always did it that way with my Iwill KK266's and it worked like a charm. That was with a Hpt370 RAID controller tho so I can't speak for the Promise thingy.
BTW, too bad about those PITT Steelers eh?

muwahahaha
GO Browns !!
