Question on fitting a cooler to an AMD64 cpu

Post by blade »

I have the AMD64 with the large raised core and Thermaltake sent me their new Golden Orb II. Problem is the bottom of the Orb is round, and it doesn't cover the 4 corners of the cpu core by at least 1/8th of an inch.

That seems to me that would create hot spots and possibly burn out the cpu, or make things unstable. Any thoughts on this? See pics below for what I mean.

I also have the Venus 12 which covers all the cpu just fine. And I intend that to be the main cpu cooler anyway. But the Orb was sent for review. It is cool looking and who knows, I may end up using it more.

As I was typing this Thermaltake sent this reply:
That wouldn't be a problem. Just go ahead and test it!

The reason why the base is smaller is to make sure that we don't run into compatibility issue with different motherboards.

Still scares me the corners not being covered like that.

yea all the heat is in the center of it. that part is just a spreader. so i shouldent adversely effect it.
