Repairing broken/bent pins on a 939 cpu

Post by blackhawk »

Must've installed my retail 3500 939 socket cpu with a couple bent pins and bent them straight up :(

I've done it on older cpus and managed to straighten them but these are so small and tightly spaced, I did manage to get them bent back at a right angle then one broke and I left the other. Totally my fault so doubt amd will replace but can you buy the repair service from them or anywhere else?

Luckily I had the money aside for the dual core search and ones being sent today but dont want to waste the 3500.

If it's been 30 days, I'd contact the retailer and explain the situation honestly. NewEgg amazed me a couple of times by replacing parts for me that I admitted to damaging myself. They just made me eat shipping.

If it's past 30 days, email AMD and explain it to them honestly. They may give you a break on an exchange. Doesn't hurt to ask and AMD is very friendly to end-users who are builders.

AMD gave me an rma so will send it in and see what they say, I told them I took the stock hs off and the cpu came with it bending two pins and one broke off when I tried to bend it back.

Well they approved the rma after a visual inspection! :D

Really surprised but this is my first cpu rma ever after using about 50-60 Intel and AMD cpus over the last 7 years. Only ever had one other cpu die and it was after I sold it and the guy said it worked once then quit.

They haven't shipped it back yet but I expect it in a bit then I'll try to get the mb working but busy with work and renovations right now

CPU showed up yesterday!

Its a week 50 2005 cpu too so its a 90 versus the older 130 I had.

Did pretty good considering its my screwup, I love amd :)

Looks like I might've solved the problem on my wife's computer with IE6 screens shutting down with errors constantly as I uninstalled MSN toolbar prior to trying to uninstall IE6 and that seemed to have cleared up the problems there.

She'd agreed to a reinstall of the OS and I really didn't have time to do it.

Glad it worked out.

Yeah AMD is usually kind to end-user builders. Try doing that with Intel and they'll laugh at you.

As to your other problem, yeah whenever IE crashes constantly it's almost always a BHO or a Toolbar.

Cant thank you guys enough :D

You're almost always right on and quick with good info.

Tried out the old MSI mb I thought I'd fried and after a few burps & hiccups it booted up! Left the power off and the battery out for a couple weeks so that must've done it.

Was going to risk pulling the bios after boot and reflashing so practiced pulling it out but thought I'd try it normally first.

Now have to sell them and get some new parts :)
