The 1920X is very appealing even at $799. This processor would last you for many years. I think it will come down to motherboard features and price on how well these sell.

Re: AMD 1920X and 1950X Threadripper Reviews at Guru 3D
If I was building a new workstation right now, I'd consider a 1920x. I do a lot of video transcoding and the extra cores would be worth it.
I have had a lot of people asking me if they should build a Threadripper rig for gaming, and my response is that unless you are also using it for video encoding or high-end photoshop work, etc (multi-core intensive apps) it would be a waste for gaming. Most games BARELY make use of two threads.

If I was building a dedicated gaming rig, I'd wait for the Intel Core i3-8300 to be released. It's supposed to be a true 4 core clocked at 4GHz and be priced ~$150.

However, I use one PC for everything so having that many cores really helps video processing. Eventually, I'd like to move to 4K and that will be a real burden on my 2500K.

I am thinking about building a unraid server on a 1920 with all those cores, but will wait until prices go down a touch since I dont REALLY need it.
