Hi, everyone; this is my first post to pcabusers. I'm looking forward to many hours of, well, abuse.

I am a Win2000 guy, but I want to dual-boot Linux with 2000 Server on my new box. Hardware wise, should this work?

(Pardon me if this is an obvious question; a curt, simple reply would be okay such as 'Yes, you dumbass, all AMD are belong to Linux.')

---Main System----
Processor: AMD Thunderbird K7 1.3Ghz
Main Board: EPoX ATX 266Bus ATA100 4-USB 6/1
Memory: 512MB PC133 SD-RAM for K7

---Other stuff----
Hard Drive: Maxtor IDE 61-GIG ATA66
Video Card: ATI AGP 32MB Rage Fury Pro
Sound Card: AvanceLogic PCI 32-Bit 3D
CD ROM: Afreey IDE 50X CDROM
CDRW/DVD: Teac IDE CDRW 12x/10x/32x 4MB
Modem: PhoebeMicro PCI Hardware DSP 56K V.90 W/Voice
Network Card: Microchip PCI 10/100 Base-T NIC

I think I'm gonna run RH 7.1, but I'm considering other distro's such as Mandrake, Debian or Mandrake.

Isn't this system a burner! I'm getting it on the cheap; head over to http://www.microchipcomputers.com and create your own custom setup.

Yes everything should work all right just not sure what drivers to use on your nic, although I would let kudzu try first and go from there.

Thanks for the reassurance. We'll see how everything goes. The box will be at work for a while, sucking packages through the LAN / T1 (mmmmm, T1) whilst chilling under my desk.

I also have choice of 3com, Intel OR Netgear (all 10/100) for NIC. Maybe I go with one of those? I'm really tempted to go with a card that I KNOW is supported rather than one which MIGHT work.

Note: 'Micro' is the dealer's brand, probably just a renaming of standard ethernet card, anyways!

Welcome! Like Vidman, I know zilch about Linux.

But, I know about prices. NewEgg has that good Epox motherboard for 31 less than your dealer with shipping of only $3. In any event, your choices should make for a VERY nice system.
