WOOHOO!!!! Photoshop runs twice as fast on my new AMD XP 2000+ system!!!!

Post by FlyingPenguin »

Heh. I haven't got a decent video card for gaming in here yet, but I wanted to see SOMETHING that showed me that I'd invested my money wisely.

I fired up Photoshop and used the SkyEffects KPT6 plugin as a benchmark (very CPU intensive plugin - it renders a horizon and sky with clouds). The old P3-1000 system took 11.5 seconds to render a scene.

Same size scene with same settings on the new system took 6.3 seconds.

WOOHOO!

I always said I never like to upgrade until I can double my processing power, and it sure looks like I near did just that.

Happy.... happy... joy... joy! :)

LOL FP! Ya and the funny thing is you didn't even double your Mhz either... It is amazing what AMD has done with the Athlon line of chips... Before then they were just a soso budget chip with a bad floating point... Now they flat out kick ass and take names! You got a 2000+ didn't you? I ran a P4 setup at 2.4 Gig and my old 1700+ at 1.7 Gig and they P4 was just a bit faster in the benchmarks especially the ram. But when it came to flat out grunt work the XP at 1.7 Gig was faster than the 2.4 P4... To me that just shows they are made to work and not pussy foot around like the P4's are designed. Its all about the IPC's!

Sure sign of the apocalypse: FP's running an AMD system, and I'm running an Intel system. According to this, frogs should rain from the sky soon...

So long Intel! :)

Frankly I wouldn't have minded a P4 system, it's just that the economics don't add up.

Up until the last year or so there's ALWAYS been a downside to going with AMD (IMO anyway) which never offset the savings. But now I can have my cake and eat it too. AMD is making better CPUs than Intel, and selling them for peanuts to the little guy. Halleluja and pass the pecan pie!

Intel is CRAZY with their small quantity pricing lately. I had to buy a P3-1000 FCPGA for a client the other day (replacement for a dead CPU). F@cking thing costs $113 at Newegg! This AMD XP2000+ I bought for myself cost $128 from NewEgg. Go figure. $15 difference for a generation jump in technology.

Oh yeah, I like this. Just tried some benchmarking in Sound Forge applying Acoustic Modeler filters which are pretty CPU intensive. Damn near double the performance again. JOY!!!!

I hear ya! :) My first jump to athlon was from a p600@800 to the tbird 1.4 and the photo apps I use like fireworks 4, cool3d and picture it all became at minimum twice as fast. I just hope AMD stays on this winning trail and provide good competition to intel for our benefits.

Congrats! :+

I hear all. I too was once an Intel freak, then the force found me and I joined the darkside. :)

It wasn't until I got this XP1700 that I truely appreciated AMD's effort and fair prices.

Oh boy! I fired up Day of Defeat on this baby. Now keep in mind I'm testing the new mobo in a seperate box (can't afford to have the workstation down any length of time) and I only have a pitiful TNT2 Vanta installed in it until I actually swap systems and install the GF3 Ti200 out of my old box.

HOWEVER even with the TNT2 DOD runs INCREDIBLY smooth. I'm blown away. I had no idea that the new CPU would perform so will with this old card. I thought the card would hold it back.

Can't WAIT to run SOF2 on this rig with the GF3. I was feeling some lag on the old rig even at 800x600 in multiplayer (especially deathmatch when there's a LOT of action on t he screen).

I'm also overjoyed to discover that the C-Media card has a LOT of signal drive. My studio monitor headphones need a hot signal and some cards can't manage it (the AC97 sound chip in my LAN box can't push them hard enough right out of the jack, but I use amplified speakers with a phone jack on that system).

The C-Media sounds sweet. Goodbye cranky SBLive!

:)

Oh, tip: if the current sound drivers are working fine, then I'd suggest not using the ones in Windows Update. I just had a BSOD on my P4 board (0x1E, KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED) which I suspect was caused by the sound driver; it bombed right when a sound event was supposed to play in IE.

Yeah, thanks. Everything's running sweet so I think I'll leave it as is. Sometimes a newer driver is NOT better.

AMD simply are the best friend of the "Power Home User" like you and me.
My AXIA Y 1gig @ 1.4 is way quicker than my mates P4 1.7 on every game we have.

MP3 encoding is another really cool benchmark. Ever though P4 are MADE to do MP3 the Athlons still work their arses off to get it done! Its like having a really hard working employee at your beck and call! :)
A little crazy, but safe enough
