Burner problems

Post by bentwookie450 »

I just picked up a lite on 40x burner to replace my 8x plextor. I was told that I should be burning a full cd in about 3-4 minutes, but all I can manage on a full cd is 8 minutes or more, regardless if its music or data. I was wondering if my cpu speed had anything to do with my slow burner speed. I have looked at all available firmware upgrades and have done them. I also have 40x media so thats not the problem. Thanks for any help. O, I'm also running win me, and cpu speed is 600mhz.

Sounds like its your CPU speed not keeping up with the burner. I have a 550 celeron here and its all it can do to keep up with the 8X Plextor that is in it...

Make sure you have DMA enabled. What burning programs are you using ?

I've used all sorts of burning programs. I'm currently using nero 5.5, I have used easy cd creator 5, and even clone cd.

Nero is best, and as recommended above make sure that DMA is enabled for the CD-RW drive.

Yes CPU will cause a bottleneck, but so will a slow hard drive subsystem.

If your system can't keep up then you will see the buffer indicator constantly drop to zero during burns in Nero - the drive will then throttle back to prevent a buffer underrun until the buffer fills back up again.

My old server (a P2-300) couldn't burn anything faster than 12x without running out of buffer constantly.

My new Athlon 700 server can manage 24x without running out of buffer, but at 32X it has a problem so it's no faster at 32x than 24x.

I as well have a 40 speed Lite-on, on an athlon 1.4, and it burns beautifully in 2.5-3.0 min, for a full cd, (seems to burn data bit faster.) Are you running alot of stuff in the background ? I am only asking because on my old 8x yamaha i was getting 8 min and on the acer 24x i was getting 6 on my cyrix 333, adn thats lower than a 600, so..... good luck.

I'm really not running anything else in the background. No music playing anything like that. This really has me confused, I guess I'll just wait for my processor upgrade then see how the burner works then. thanks guys
